Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Last Kind Words Saloon
by
Larry McMurtry
ss
, August 31, 2014
It's a hoot. Engaging, funny, maybe even a spoof on Wild West storytelling, this last McMurtry novel (a novelette, actually) is a window onto his unique imagination and colorful characters. I encourage him to make those spectacular women the protagonists of his next work.

My Butterfly Girl Flight From Cancer Abuse Schizophrenia
by
Annette White Parks
ss
, September 27, 2013
Writers use their craft to sort through the confusion of their lives. Annette White-Parks displays a rare courage in telling her story as a teen mother and a later as a working grandmother. Her story is as much about the choices she made and the consequences they have continued to reap as it is the characters she so vividly portrays. My Butterfly Girl is a compelling work. I am reluctant to call it a page-turner because the phrase connotes a more commercial venture than this. But reader beware, once you have plunged into this story where love battles with addictions, abuse, and mental illness, you will be hard pressed to stop until you have reached the last page.

Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher The Epic Life & Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis
by
Timothy Egan
ss
, August 14, 2013
Who would predict Timothy Egan's book about Edward Curtis would be a page-turner? From the getgo I was pulled into the vortex of Egan's meticulous account of this obsessive photographer whose passion sent him to the brink of self-destruction. Is this what being a true artist is all about? Curtis left a legacy that few of us will see, but his chronicle of the American Indian will live as a superior gift to the world. Likewise, Egan's research has shed new light on the history of our first people. This is a book to have on the shelf and to share.
