The Flight of the Falcon
by

Wow. This book emphasizes du Maurier's knack for suspense and creepiness. It starts out a bit slow--I didn't get into it until page 70, but afterwards, it was a ride. Her writing is beautiful and snares you in, hypnotizing you with its language. One of my favorites by Daphne du Maurier.

Forgotten Garden
by
Kate Morton

Beautifully written. The previous reader's illustration of weaving is certainly an accurate description of Morton's tale. The book is woven beautifully--the characters lives and their interconnectedness. I did, however, become a little confused with all of the characters and different time periods, but it shouldn't deter a reader from the story. This book is an escapist reading. I read it over a short vacation and am certainly glad I did.

Holes Movie Cover
by
Louis Sachar

I fell in love with this book as did my young daughter. She even requests this book at bedtime. Although this book is categorized for the pre-teen audience, I believe people of any age could pick up this book and enjoy it immensely. The fumbling hero(es) Sachar has created are incredibly loveable and courageous. Readers will find themselves laughing, sympathizing, and hoping with the characters through this wonderfully humorous and courageous little book.

The Shadow of the Wind
by
Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Lucia Graves

Currently reading this book and am really enjoying it. Zafon's writing is beautiful and powerful. I agree with other readers comments: this is a book that will take you to another world--one that is shrouded with mystery and hauntingly beautiful writing. Zafron has created incredibly powerful characters, ones to love and to hate. Absolutely one fun ride.

Earth Democracy Justice Sustainability & Peace
by
Vandana Shiva

Shiva's writing is stark, to the point, and poetically phrased in many parts. Her writing is a call to wake-up and become conscious to the ignorances of the world and its implications. A must-read for everybody, particularly the Western reader. A powerful book.

Reliable Wife
by
Robert Goolrick

There was a lot of hype surrounding this book. I believe because of this I found myself a bit disappointed by the end of the book. Goolrick's writing is well-done... the story has a twist, which is always a must for good mystery/suspense stories, but I can't name it... I just wasn't won over in the end.

In the Woods
by
Tana French

I found the book anti-climactic. French does a good job giving you the ominous and creepy feeling of any mystery/thriller, but failed to deliver the punch. No rise and fall. It felt like I kept waiting for something to happen, but was disappointed because she didn't reward her reader with their patience.

What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day
by
Pearl Cleage
Hallesmommy123
, September 05, 2009
The writing is sharp, witty, and will cut you with the truth. Cleage will have you laughing, crying, and seething. A wonderful and tough little book that doesn't mess around, shatters stereotypes and calls people on their bs; yet, at the same time, draws you in with its optimistic, warm and brave insight. A knockout.

The Road
by
Cormac McCarthy
Hallesmommy123

Provocative and disturbing. A book you won't want to put down, but won't want to keep reading either, but you'll have to, and you will. The Road is a must read and is extremely relevant in our unsteady global times. It is a book that will stay with you, whether you want it to or not. Heads up: Not for the faint of heart.

Thirteenth Tale
by
Diane Setterfield

Setterfield's novel gains momentum as the story continues. The best moments of the book? When the infamous Vida Winters is retelling the tale of her youth. Give you the creeps and keep you wanting to read more.

Broken For You

Charming. Starts out a tad slow, but gradually folds you into the story. By the end of the book you'll be with the characters and be quietly won over.
