Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I listened to this on audiobook, and found it to be a masterful portrayal of a unique slice of life from the 60's. The book lets us into a world most people would otherwise not have access to, and does so convincingly and with tremendous humor and poignancy. The historical backdrop of the story adds depth to the personal journeys of the characters, without being heavy-handed. I love the way the narrative goes from the viewpoint of one character to another, illustrating the complexity of their inner lives, and the contrast between their thoughts and how they must behave outwardly in order to survive in a society filled with prejudice.

Growing Up Again Second Edition Parenting Ourselves Parenting Our Children
by

This is a book written primarily for people with difficult childhoods who are now parenting children. The book is relevant to all parents, however, because it tells about the developmental needs of children at different stages, and how to parent children in healthy, emotionally supportive ways There are practical, clearcut charts that describe the spectrum of approaches to providing structure and nurturing of children. The authors have another purpose: showing adults how to recognize the developmental needs that were not met as they grew up, and how to "reparent" themselves in order to be fully functioning adults. I'm a mental health professional who works with children, families and adults, and find this to be the most valuable book on parenting of all the ones I have read over the years.
