Sleeping with the Beast
by

, June 27, 2012
This book is a lovely tribute to a large (well to do) family full of boys and big dogs - dogs who share the beds, rule the roost, and enjoy the companionship of all the members of their pack - the two leggers and the other four leggers! The photos are beautiful - and the observations are poignant to anyone who has ever loved and shared a life with dogs. Any dog lover, and especially one with a love for beautiful dog-centric interiors, will love this book!

Georgia in Hawaii When Georgia OKeeffe Painted What She Pleased
by
Amy Novesky, Yuyi Morales
Cindy Wexler
, May 31, 2012
Illustrator Yuyi Morales takes inspiration in O'Keeffe's incredible collection of paintings done on her 3 month tour of Hawaii in 1939. The tour was the inspiration of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (now known as Dole) - they wanted the famous flower painter to paint them two paintings of pineapples for a pineapple juice campaign. Georgia wanted to live near the pineapple fields, but the company said "No! Only workers live near the fields." Georgia told them she was a worker, there to paint - and they still said no. They gave her a pineapple - the fruit, that is - because that is what they wanted her to paint. Georgia said "humph!" and toured islands for 90 days - she painted flowers, fish hooks and the wide blue sea, and in the end, she gave the company two paintings, but they were not of pineapples. The company wasn't happy and Georgia returned home. The company sent her a pineapple hoping to still get a painting of one - but by then Georgia had time to reflect on her time in Hawaii - and she still didn't need the fruit to make the painting. O'Keeffe is an inspiration to artists and women and free thinkers everywhere! Morales illustrations are clearly inspired by O'Keeffe's work - but that doesn't mean Yuyi just copied O'Keeffe's style - this book is full of beautiful illustrations that compliment both the artist and Novesky's presentation of this little known facet of O'Keeffe's incredible career

Rangers Apprentice 10 Emperor of Nihon Ja
by
John Flanagan
Cindy Wexler
, September 01, 2011
I have loved every single Ranger's Apprentice book - the character development has been terrific, and the series never lost it's excitement or drama! This book continues in the wonderful course Flanagan set out - until the very end. It all seemed so rushed - I'm sad to say adios to this series, and a smidge disappointed in the rushed ending. I don't want to say too much, and spoil anyone's fun, though! I'm really going to miss the adventures of Will, Horace, Halt and company. Or I thought I was - then today I discovered #11, The Lost Stories, coming out 10/4/11! Oh happy me!

Those Across the River
by
Christopher Buehlman
Cindy Wexler
, August 05, 2011
Set in the simpler time post World War 1, this story grabs hold of you and leads down the forest trail - and before you know it, without agreeing to be terrified, there you are, with those across the river - and it is terrifying! The final hundred pages are don't put it down good, cancel all meetings good, do not disturb good. Hard to believe this is Buehlman's first novel - it is abundantly clear he has been crafting words for quite some time. Order yours today!

, April 06, 2011
Here's a view of life on the road doing Renaissance Festivals across America - in the 80s, that is - an unexpected life full of surprises, success and failure, adventure, romance and inevitable automotive difficulties. If you've ever attended a Renaissance Festival and wondered to yourself "how exactly do all these people who appear to do these shows for a living actually make their living? what must their lives be like?" then this is the book for you.
