Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Lessons from the Fat-o-sphere: Quit Dieting and Declare a Truce with Your Body

This book promotes a defeatist attitude, and neglects personal responsbility. With little medical evidence, the authors suggest morbid obesity is out of most people's control. America is the most obese country in the world. Travel to Europe and it is clearly obvious, as you don't see the obesity as in the USA. Have our genetics changed so rapidly? No. What has changed is portion size, lack of physical activity, poor choices, etc. While it does attempt to offer support in terms of self image, it seems to offer excuses to the morbidly obese. Suggesting being 300 lbs can be 'healthy' is short sighted. Unfortunately, health will change over time and the probability is that this obesity will ultimately take it's toll on the body. This book, likewise, will ultimately take a toll on readers who accept these ideas.

This book will improve the self esteem of those obese. The hypothesis that you can be healthy and obese is not supported well, and it is absurd to suggest this. Kate Harding has advocated on her blog for her readers to write positive reviews on Amazon and Powells, and to rank those that opposed the book as very bad. This practice is not appropriate since reviews should be objective, and not advocated by a blog host. Just becuase someone does not agree, does not mean they are a troll. Especially given the poor evidence she gives related to the correlation of health vs. weight. For example, just because someone who is 300lbs has good blood pressure doesn't mean they are healthy, however this book would make that assumption on a sample of a few. Mixing blogging and non-fiction is a bad recipe, and degrades the process.
