Seven Roads to Hell A Screaming Eagle at Bastogne
by
Donald R Burgett
jkriz
, May 27, 2009
As a self described World War II history buff, I am immensely interested in the exploits of the 101st Airborne Division and the famed screaming Eagles. The story of what our soldiers endured at Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge is one that all should be familiar. No where does the phrase "the cost of freedom is high" ring truer than in those Belgian woods. What sets this book apart is the way author Donald Burgett makes the reader "FEEL" what it was like to be a part of the incredible hardship that was the Battle of the Bulge. Burgett paints word pictures that almost make you feel what he felt and even smell what he smelled facing war at it most brutal. The sacrifices these young soldiers faced are hard to believe. I especially liked the character development of the men that Burgett served with - he made you feel as if you knew them as well. Burgett is an exceptional story teller and historian of the first degree. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what our soldiers had to endure to secure the freedoms that we enjoy today.

Riding Rockets The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut
by
Mike Mullane

, May 22, 2009
Rarely have I laughed out loud at something I have read in a book. Riding Rockets is one book that I have read that has produced many laugh out loud moments as the author shares his experiences as an original space shuttle astronuat. His insights and transparency about the grand adventure called 'astronuat' is one that will leave you laughing but will also leave you in tears as Mullane takes you from the triumph of being introduced as an astronaut to tears as he shares his heart reagarding the tradgedy that was the Challenger Disaster. Mullane is a gifted writer that paints an incredible portrait of what it was really like to be a Shuttle Astronaut. I have read this book at least 10 times an have found it to be as fun and insightful on reading 10 as the day that I first picked it up. Woven throughout the historical aspect of the Shuttle Program is Mullane's personal insights and acceptance of women and scientists in the NASA community. That subplot alone is worth reading but there is so much more in this narritave that will capture the reader in this adventure. I place this book in my personal Top 5 and recommend it to all who desire an incredibly fun and insightful read!

Unbroken Chain Apogee Books Space Series 20 With CDROM
by
Guenter Wendt

, May 22, 2009
One of the best 'NASA Insider" books I have read on the grand adventure of our space race to land on the moon. Guenther Wendt became a confidant to the astronuats and a man highly respected and loved by this incredible group of overachievers. What set this book apart for me was the telling of the 'gotcha's' - practical jokes that were played on one another to help to relieve the incredible tensions that these folks were under 24/7. The insights, struggles, truimphs and tradgedies reminded me of what an unbelievable journey the race to the moon was for our country. The author tells an incredible story in a enjoyable manner. If you want to get insights into what really happened in our race to the moon, this book is a must read for you!

Live from Cape Canaveral Covering the Space Race from Sputnik to Today
by
Jay Barbree
jkriz
, May 15, 2009
Having read the vast majority of books about our race to the moon with the Russians, I thought I knew all of the stories. I was wrong. Jay Barbree became a friend and confidant of our nations first astronauts. He shares insights both historical as well as personal that solidifies in my mind that this period in our nations history was one wild ride. If you are new to the history of the early days of our space program or are 'seasoned' vets of that time period, you will thouroughly enjoy this book.
