Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

There are times in one's life, when a book touches it in a manner that is life altering. Whether the ideas, expressed in a clear voice and understandable phrasing with highly convincing scientific arguments, or down to earth examples and subtle humor and delightful amusement which makes the not so easy scientific facts, accepted. As for life altering effect - the fascinating explanation of the huge universe and its wonders made it easier to accept that although our existence is extremely short compared to it, we matter! WE ARE STARDUST!

I have been dreaming about a tablet for a long time. I either could not afford it or the cheap ones had no features that I wanted. It seems that I found my true love. It is sleek and connected to my favorite bookseller (I bought many books from Powell's). Since my eyesight is getting a little worse (age - you know), portable -the perfect solution and mobility and the apps will help me consulting "live" dictionaries for my Italian course. Cheers Anat

The Swerve: How the World Became Modern
by
Greenblatt, Stephen

The fascinating tale of a search for a poem that ultimately changed the world. Reads like a thriller. With style and the amazing ability to excite an intellectual curiosity, S. Greenblat brings us history, philosophy literature and above all an Epicurean intellectual pleasure/

Fabric of the Cosmos Space Time & the Texture of Reality

With lucid, well organised prose, with authority and passion, Brian Greene introduces the wonders of the universe. It unravels as a fantastic fairy tale, with enthousiastic participation of the greatest minds of all times. Vulgarisation but not vulgar, it allows the regular folks to dip into this magic and come out starry eyed. Great book. Anyone who has ever wandered how does it all hold together and since when, must read the book.
