Inherent Vice
by
Thomas Pynchon
Stephen Gerritson
, January 26, 2011
In his latest book, Pynchon returns to the wacky world of California in the late 60s that he first described in "The Crying of Lot 49." The plot is also similar: a vague mystery being investigated by an ex-surfer turned private eye who doesn't really know who is pulling the strings. Unlike his last book ("Seize the Day"), this one moves at a good pace and has a coherent story line. Its greatest strength is its humor, as Pynchon skewers the drug culture, southern California lifestyles, the police, and just about everyone and everything else. If you like Pynchon, you'll love this.

North Of South An African Journey
by
Shiva Naipaul
Stephen Gerritson
, August 14, 2008
Naipaul's visit to Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia uses anecdotes to portray societies in flux and the growing pains associated with change. An eye for detail and colorful description is at times offset by an uneasy feeling of prejudice on the part of the author.

Dean Acheson A Life In The Cold War
by
Robert L Beisner

, August 14, 2008
This is a superb assessment of Acheson's impact on foreign policy. Extremely well written, it articulates a complex set of topics very clearly, and pulls no punches about shortcomings of action and character. A great read!

Young J Edgar Hoover the Red Scare & the Assault on Civil Liberties
by
Kenneth Ackerman

, July 07, 2008
An excellent examination and analysis of J. Edgar Hoover's early years that demonstrates his lack of concern for constitutionally protected rights even before he became head of the FBI.
