Michelle Carroll: What We're Watching: The Threequel (0 comment)
Do we love books? Yes, of course, obviously! We’re obsessed with them. But that doesn’t mean we’re not just as obsessed with so many of the great movies and television shows being released today...

    Ghost Map by Steven Johnson
    3Kcats, September 13, 2017
Cholera. London 1854. Early epidemiology. An anesthesiologist and a curate solving the mystery of a horribly deadly outbreak. What more could you want?

The Book of Fate by Saniee, Parinoush
    3Kcats, August 20, 2017
I've been interesting in learning about Iran since high school when my best friend was half Iranian whose father came over to the US from Tehran. This book is a fascinating look into the life of a woman, who is married off at a young age to someone she doesn't know. This was done because she loved someone else and her brothers found her interactions with the man inappropriate. The book deals with political opposition to the ruling Government which brings many lessons to this initially naive girl. The book covers fifty years of her life in Iran. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a woman's view of what life was like during those tumultuous years.

Lentil Underground Renegade Farmers & the Future of Food in America by Liz Carlisle
    3Kcats, April 30, 2017
A fascinating book about something I knew pretty much nothing about- farming, and specifically organic lentil farming. Sounds dull? Nope. It's an interesting story about farmers in Montana that have moved from conventional farming to organic farming with an emphasis on lentil and heritage grains. They "feed" the soil with lentils and other nitrogen fixers versus chemicals. The lentils are good for the soil and are also a crop they can sell. It's a win-win.

A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table by Molly Wizenberg
    3Kcats, April 12, 2015
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was like having a friend tell you all about her life and give you delicious sounding recipes to go along with the each part of the story. The book is written in a very casual, informal way, that draws you in. I marked most of the recipe pages so that I could try them out later.

Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson and Veronica Chambers
    3Kcats, March 04, 2015
What a journey Marcus Samuelsson has had! An Ethiopian, adopted and raised in Sweden, came of age in European kitchens and found his own place in the world in Harlem. He's an interesting and inspiring man, who is a great ambassador of African cooking and flavors. His desire to "chase flavor", learn about and try different flavor combinations will resonate with anyone who loves to learn about food and the cultures they come from, as well as eat!

The Daily Soup Cookbook by Leslie Kaul
    3Kcats, November 16, 2014
I love Fall because it's soup season to me. I have made many of the recipes in this cookbook, but my favorite is the Mexican Tortilla Soup recipe. It is delicious! I haven't found a restaurant's tortilla soup that compares with this one I can make at home.

The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder
    3Kcats, March 21, 2014
A fascinating look at the Oracle of Omaha. Beginning with his childhood, the complex relationship with his parents and his early start as a businessman, then through the incredible growth of Berkshire with all it's up and downs along the way. A good read for anyone interested in Warren Buffett.

Drift the Unmooring of American Military Power by Rachel Maddow
    3Kcats, April 06, 2013
A very important book. Even more so with all the war talk coming out of North Korea these days. It makes me think and look differently at the current events.

Finding Life in the Land of Alzheimer's: One Daughter's Hopeful Story by Lauren Kessler
    3Kcats, August 05, 2012
My Mom had Alzheimer's. It took me 7 months after my Mom died to be able to read this book, but I'm certainly glad that I did. It confirmed much of my experience with Mom in her Alzheimer's/Dementia specific assisted living. There are caregivers that are wonderful, caring individuals who come in on their day off when your loved one is nearing the end. It's a hard job being a caregiver. You are underpaid and much is demanded of you. It's not a job for everyone, but those that do it well are key to making the experience families go through a little more bearable. Also, I never felt that Alzheimer's took away the essence of my Mom. She was still there just in a different way than I was used to for the majority of my life. I recommend this book.

    Molokai by Alan Brennert
    3Kcats, February 03, 2012
I really enjoyed this book. I had read a Nonfiction account of the colony (The Colony by John Tayman) which was very good, but this story told as a fiction account helped me connect to the characters in a different way. This is also a "One Book, One San Diego" selection for 2012 and I'm so glad that it is. I am hoping to be able to attend one of the citywide discussions of the book this year.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
    3Kcats, December 30, 2011
I'm only on page 70 but am enjoying this book. It's more about the language and words than the story for me so far. I have developed a vivid picture of the characters in my mind. The kid is perspective and funny. I can't wait to see where the story goes.

Colony The Harrowing True Story of the Exiles of Molokai by John Tayman
    3Kcats, August 20, 2011
I've been on a Hawaii book kick since getting back in February. This is a fascinating, well-researched, thought provoking and sad book. It is atrocious what those in power did to those that had or were perceived to have leprosy. What humans will do to one another in amazing. I recommend this book.

    Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell
    3Kcats, July 09, 2011
I really enjoyed this book. We love Hawaii and I'm always interested in learning more about Hawaii and the culture. This book was packed full of information and written in a very readable style. You won't think of Hawaii the same after reading this. It will leave you with a new understanding and appreciation for the culture (at least it did for me).

It Gets Better Coming Out Overcoming Bullying & Creating a Life Worth Living by Dan Savage, Terry Miller
    3Kcats, May 29, 2011
I knew that the It Gets Better Project had a powerful mesage, but reading the book was more than I expected. It wasn't the authors whose names I knew that had the strongest, most powerful message, but those regular everyday folks whose stories resonanted and stayed with me. I highly recommend this book.

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell
    3Kcats, March 13, 2011
I read this book while on vacation. I was going to leave it in Hawaii after I was done, but it had so much information that I brought it home with me so that I could read it again.

This Land Is Their Land Reports from a Divided Nation by Barbara Ehrenreich
    3Kcats, January 21, 2011
I've read "Nickel and Dimed" and looked forward to reading this. Ehrenreich has a unique way of highlighting the economic disparity that exists. Each 3-5 page essay allows her to get right to the point she wants to make. Sometimes they feel like rants, but justifiable rants.

Behind the Pine Curtain by Gerri Hill
    3Kcats, October 20, 2010
Enjoyable, quick read. The intensity of Jackie and Kay's relationship is easy to relate to. That first love is different from any other.
