Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Great Indoors

This book almost made me swear off English authors. The HMMM…urrr…and uh uh uh’s almost did me in. The inability of the characters to finish sentences or have complete thoughts drove me almost nuts! It would have been different if I knew enough about them to KNOW what they are thinking or trying to say (like I can do with one of my friends, which I am convinced that the reason she has this “issue” is because she lived in England) so I could complete the thought. I picked this book up thinking it would be interesting, the main character Martha owns a shop filled with old things she refinishes and displays for sale. But sadly, not enough time is spent on this topic, instead we spend time on a funeral, a guy who is not only skinny but smokes and is a chronic non finisher of sentences and an erer. Read this if you must, with such a glowing review how could you not just to prove me wrong?

I picked this book up the summer of 2007....little did I know that by that fall my husband would be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The same cancer as Uncle Benny. This book helped me understand what we were going through and that we were facing a life ending cancer.

Think gardening, cooking and magic. No one paints a garden word picture like Sarah.

Smoky the Cowhorse is the best horse book ever written. If you want a real taste of the life of a horse in the west, you cannot go wrong with this book! Will James is number 1 as a cowboy author and his illustrations are top notch.
