The video that goes with the book is very well done. This book is not for a beginner, but for someone who has done some jewelry and is looking for ideas, and looking to learn new techniques. The designs are sophisticated and she advocates high quality work. Note: altho she makes doing pmc (precious metal clay) work sound easy, her list of equipment does not include the actual kiln and firing equipment needed.

Betrayal of Trust J P Beaumont
by

If you like JP Beaumont, you will like this book. Engaging story, with the normal back and forth between him and Mel, his wife. They travel down to the state capitol of Olympia, and with the help of some electronic sleuthing, deal with some sleazy characters and some that appear good on the surface, and some nasty teenage bullying as well.. We learn more about Beau's history in a side story that develops as well.

Hearts on a String

Good summer reading. A motley crew of women end up spending a few days in a hotel suite in florida due to airport closures, and they become friends. They cook and confess and commiserate and although some of the plot turns are a little unrealistic, it is women bonding! Estrogen forever. And they evolve, and plan to meet again.

Suite Francaise

This inspired a long conversation in our book club. What would it have really been like to have been in Paris before and during the Germans occupation? Or in a small town with Germans occupying? How is this paralleled in the various wars we have known? One member compared the decision making some of the people in the book had to make to the classic boiling a frog, as the water gets hotter and hotter, the frog doesn't notice the gradual change, and dies. In each moment, should you flee? do you stay? What is the decision point? The book had an unfinished feel to it, and included 2 appendixes which added to the content, that explained how the book came to be, and included some of the letters and manuscript from before and after the book was written. The letters were heart breaking, as the author was a Jew who was sent to a concentration camp in mid 1942, and was killed, as was her husband. Their children were hidden and survived.

This Will Make You Smarter

I love reading essays, and this is a collection of short essays, that inspire even more thinking. They aren't all "new", but they are all answers to the key question "What scientific concept would improve everybody's cognitive toolkit". Not all of them are that "scientific", but they are definitely about processing, thinking, cognition, and lots of other concepts. A treasure trove of ideas to stretch the brain.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Maybe I'm not enough of a dog lover, I didn't fall in love with this book. I thought the main character made a series of bad choices, and couldn't really empathize with him, even though his wife was dying of cancer. My book club agreed that the writing was average, not high calibre. And, the "happy ending" seemed a little forced, and predictable. The characters didn't really have depth, and there were a few fun moments, but overall, so-so.

Great photos, instructions that look easy to follow, and creative projects. I would wear the projects in this book. I'm a little intimidated by the size 0, 1, and 2 needles, but am willing to try.

Still Alice
by
Lisa Genova
islander12
, May 11, 2012
Have you ever wondered how much of your personality still needs to be there for "you" to still be "you"? Lisa Genova is an Alzheimer's expert and writes a story that anyone who knows someone with Alzheimers, or even knows someone who has had a stroke and has lost some of their brain functioning, can connect with. This story is particularly touching because it is early on-set Alzheimers. In the beginning of the book the main character has just minor lapses of memory (as most of us who are getting older do), but she rapidly moves to more serious problems. Throughout the book, more questions come up. Would you rather commit suicide than stay alive in body only? How does the disease affect the rest of the family? Husband, children, grandchildren? How does it feel when you realize you are losing it, or have lost much of the brain power you used to have? How can others compassionately treat those with Alzheimers? The main character is a strong advocate for support groups for both the patients and their families, which aids the transitions of all, and the book also includes resources.

Spirit Catches You & You Fall Down A Hmong Child Her American Doctors & the Collision of Two Cultures
by
Anne Fadiman
islander12
, May 02, 2012
Our book club read this, and at our meeting, we couldn't stop talking about the issues: the Dr/family miscommunications, what could the Dr's have done differently, what if our town had gotten a 10% population influx of Hmong immigrants on welfare, how would we have dealt with it? What was happening now in these hospitals? Have the Hmong integrated into the local culture any more? The little girl from the story, Lia, is still alive more than 20 years later in a persistent vegetative state, what would that be like? How could the Child Protective Service intervention been prevented? We wanted to know more about the Hmong migration and how their culture in the US is doing now? Anne Fadiman captured the personal and the cultural in this story, and it was dense with detail, history and emotion.

This is an older book, but it has a nice mix of how-to and photos of artists work to inspire you. It goes beyond jewelry to include a bird house, boxes, a chess set and more.
