The story is set in 1930s Communist Russia and starts in one of the Labour Camps that imprison thousands of women who were taken prisoner by Stalin's Army; it follows the story of two best friends Sofia and Anna. Anna is very ill and Sofia sees no way to save her but to try and escape but Anna has to leave Sofia behind because of her weak condition, promising to come back for her. However there is a problem when Anna falls in love with Sophia’s old lover leading to upset. This book has it all- romance, passion, poignant, excitement all in an accurate historical backdrop of a very unstable 1930s communist Russia.

This novel was the first Elliott novel that I read and I loved it! The heroine has a spat with her brother and is forced to seek shelter with her cousin, leading to treacherous consequences when her cousin’s fiancée falls in love with her. This is a great read with a good, sweet, enjoyable heroine that will keep you reading.
