Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

When I first started reading this book I was a bit taken aback as it was not what I thought it would be. But quite soon I was engrossed, inspired, related in many personal ways to Cheryl and dreaded that the book, and the journey I'd taken with her, was soon coming to an end. I have recommended this book many times to people and will be first in line when the movie comes out Dec 2014.

Patti Smith

I was, admittedly, never a big fan of punk rocker Patti Smith, but with all the buzz about her book I decided to read it. I cannot tell you the feeling I got and the respect I gained in reading this book. She so perfectly captured the era and world that she lived in and I understood the complicated, deep relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe. Through it all she remained true to herself, being the true artist that she is. For the record I did purchase her CD, Gone Again, and it is now a favorite of mine. Highly recommended.

With Child

Another terrific book by Laurie R. King. The first one I’ve read in her Kate Martinelli series. Several plot lines, all of which were very interesting, especially when she becomes close with her partners stepdaughter, who eventually gets kidnapped. It's really very good. Kate is a lesbian and it’s treated really as a byline, no big deal as it should be, and her characters are so clear and likeable that you really feel like you are in their world instantly. She is a favorite author.

Major Pettigrews Last Stand

There's nothing better than a good English novel and this was a classic. Written with intelligence and English style and charm, you come to love the character of Major Pettigrew and the lovely story that unfolds with those who live around him and, in particular, his growing friendship with the shopkeeper, Mrs. Ali who is from Pakistan. This is the author's debut and I certainly hope there will be more to follow.

House At Riverton
by
Kate Morton
Autumnseer
, September 19, 2011
A lovely English tale from the point of view of one of the staff's maid, Grace, who works at Riverton House in the English countryside. She starts as a young girl working in the lowest positions downstairs and eventually moves up and becomes the private maid to the daughter, Hannah, whereupon they become quite bonded as they share several secrets throughout their lives. Eventually Grace is taken with Hannah when she marries, though in the long run she is living back at Riverton House. Along the way we get to know all the interesting characters of Riverton's family and the answer to a death that no one knows the truth about except Grace, Hannah and her sister, Emmeline. A lovely book, drawn out in interesting detail that you can take your time deliciously reading and enjoying to the last page.

The Way We Were
by
Marcia Willett
Autumnseer
, September 18, 2011
Another lovely, well written and interesting book by Marcia Willett. She is fast becoming another English favorite of mine. This book goes between two time periods " something which I normally don't like " but knowing the ending (to a certain extent regarding a main character) made it interesting to find out more about what happened earlier. The book starts out with a young pregnant woman whose fiance has died. She going to the English countryside to live with a friend and her family to have her child and it is a storm swept area of the country. She narrowly makes it and so the story starts to unfold between this woman, her friend and their family and others around her. You learn early on that this main character somehow died early but you don't know how or why or the impact on the next generation until you finish the book. Good reading!

Hole in Our Gospel What Does God Expect of Us the Answer That Changed My Life & Might Just Change the World
by
Richard Stearns
Autumnseer

This was the perfect book to read after reading “Radical” by David Platt to grow your faith, to loosen the ties that bind, especially here in comfortable America, and to be the hands and feet of God. Richard Stearns is the CEO of World Vision and his own amazing story, coupled with staggering statistics of the world's poor and dying (as we buy another $5 Starbucks) reach to your heart and convict you to DO MORE! As a Christian, all should real this book. If you are not, you should still read this book. Shame on us for not doing more. Highly recommended.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
by
David Wroblewski
Autumnseer
, September 13, 2011
Good books draw you in and beckon when you are gone. The moment you set eyes upon the page you have stepped into that world and are surrounded in every way to that place, those people, and in this case those Sawtelle dogs. Mind you, this was not an easy book for me to read. The second half was difficult, and the ending isn't tidy as I almost hoped for, but the writing, the characters, this story makes you endure it in a satisfying way. A fine debut and the kind of book that when I look back upon the title, or see the cover (which aptly portrays it) I will immediately be next to Edgar, his dogs, that farm, that place, in that story.

Even if you were not a big fan of Patti Smith, this book was written so well that you felt like you were with her, in NYC, during that amazing time period of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. It's also a fascinating look at her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe. I could not put it down.

This is the kind of book you can sink your teeth into and you hate to see it come to an end. The minute you open the book you are transported into this world of Edgar Sawtelle and are gripped until the end.
