Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Snow Child

A very real, yet magical glimpse at the dark heart of Alaska. A land of dreams, intense darkness and intense light, where depression and elation grow side by side. Step back in time to the rough and tumble 1920s and an Alaskan homestead where a woman's resolve, sanity and commitment is tested by a young girl born of snow and belief. You will struggle to put this book down, unless perhaps it begins to snow outside and you head out to build or dream your own snow child.

Rock Candy

Shares strong characteristics of the work of Sharon Olds, raw portraits of men abusing women, women gaining strength even as they are broken down, sexually charged verse, feminist in its celebration of women and their strength to endure in a hard, lustful world. Very erotic, a bit clunky in its structure, but overall a powerful vision of life in the Pacific Northwest from several perspectives, those enduring logging and fruit work in the 30s and 40s and the views of the children and grandchildren of these people. The longer poem, "Elegy for Chastity" is a magnificent, dark tribute to a friend who's story almost went untold. The collection's final poem, Blackberry Pie was featured on Writer's Almanac with Garrison Kiellor.
