Renee Macalino Rutledge: Powell's Q&A: Renee Macalino Rutledge, author of 'One Hundred Percent Me' (0 comment)
Could you describe your latest book, One Hundred Percent Me?
A little girl is used to hearing questions about her looks all the time. "Where are you from?" "What are you?" These questions are a constant reminder from others that she is different. As she embraces her identity and culture, she teaches others that she belongs, that the differences they notice are part of what make her unique, special, and herself....

    Night Film by Marisha Pessl
    Rachelle Shanrock, December 28, 2013
I love to read, but in general most of the time I probably only read for 20 minutes at a time. Not with Night Film. I read it in, oh, I suppose, 6 hour increments. Over 3 days. I just finished it and my head is still spinning. Yes, the use of italics is way too much. Sure, there might be a couple plot holes I didn't notice. But none of that matters one bit. Because this book is ENCHANTING. It drew me in, I almost felt like I literally couldn't put it down. And it was so exciting. Toward the end I just couldn't believe the turn of events and my eyes just hungrily ate up every single word. Scott, Nora, even Hopper, and especially Ashley, enchanted me as I got to know them and felt their presence. There were a lot of quotes that I loved, but here's a random one: "And just like that, he began to tell us all about her as the rain beat the windows like an army trying to get in." This book haunts me and I can't wait for the day I pick it up to read it again. For Pete's sake, just read it!

Mastering the Art of French Eating Lessons in Food & Love from a Year in Paris by Ann Mah
    Rachelle Shanrock, December 28, 2013
"It was a near-perfect meal, not just because of the food, which had been exquisite, but also because of the restaurant's loving interpretation of place and culture and cuisine. Perhaps I was lightly tipsy on ambience and Champagne, but I thought I could read a story in some of the dishes." This is a rather lovely book. It was a cookbook -meets history - meets memoir. There was more French history than I expected and sometimes it seemed a little out of place. But I enjoyed the times when she spoke about her own experiences in Paris and added a little bit of philosophy and optimism. I just got back from France less than 2 months ago, and this book made me realize how much I missed. There is always more to see in Paris and by reading this book I felt like I got to experience a little more of it. It was a quick read and it made me smile and made me feel like I was in France, if only for a little while. I definitely recommend this book. It's a lovely little escape.

The Man in the Window by Jon Cohen
    Rachelle Shanrock, December 28, 2013
The Man in the Window is very unique. I totally loved it. It was a heartwarming page-turner that was laugh out loud funny. I really enjoyed getting to know the other characters, like Gracie, Atlas, and Arnie, even though clearly it was Iris and Louis that were the main focus. Getting to know those other characters too was integral in getting to know Iris and Louis. By the end I felt like I was really living these events with them; I felt like one of the neighbors watching Louis fall out the window and I drove with them to hospital crammed in the back seat. I'm so happy Nancy Pearl picked this gem as one of her Book Lust Discoveries. What a wonderful, well-written read.

The Shoemakers Wife by Adriana Trigiani
    Rachelle Shanrock, September 24, 2012
"The Shoemaker's Wife" is an absolutely gorgeous story. Unlike anything else Adriana Trigiani has written, it is about 2 Italian American immigrants, who meet once in Italy as teenagers, then again in America. Ciro and Enza are wonderfully developed characters, and I found myself cheering along with them when they met success, and crying along with them in any sad moments. I was very sad to put this book down when I finished it; and I hope that Trigiani keeps writing masterpieces like this one.

Happy All The Time by Laurie Colwin
    Rachelle Shanrock, June 13, 2012
my first Laurie Colwin novel, I loved it. I laughed out loud repeatedly throughout, and I became very attached to the characters. Guido, Holly, Vincent, and Misty, all manage to find love and friendship despite themselves and I loved being part of the journey for a little while. I never reread books, but this is one I might have to reread. enjoy!

Novel Bookstore by Laurence Cosse, Alison Anderson
    Rachelle Shanrock, December 01, 2011
i originally checked this book out from the library. when i was about halfway into the book, i suddenly put it down, and quickly bought 2 copies, one for me, and one for a friend of mine who is an avid reader. i just knew i was going to want to have this book around for a long time. this novel combines all my favorite themes; true love, discovering yourself and others, reading, bookstores, and of course, Paris, France. i don't think i could have dreamed up a better story. i positively fell in love with the characters, and now so desperately wish for a store like "The Good Novel" to pop up right around the corner. i also agree with the other reviewer that said he found a bunch of new book recommendations from the book; i also found myself constantly pausing to google an author or book title that was discussed in the book, with the certainty that it will also be a good one. if you enjoy reading, just read this!

State of Wonder by Patchett, Ann
    Rachelle Shanrock, September 04, 2011
i have to admit that i'm not yet halfway through this book so far. however, i'm just absolutely loving it. i'm the type of reader that usually kind of skims (especially through long descriptive paragraphs) but ann patchett's writing is so good, so amazing, so beautiful, that i'm finding myself reading very slowly, capturing every single word. this book transports me straight to brazil as soon as i pick it up, and it effortlessly involves me in the story so well that when i have to set the book down for a moment i have difficulty putting it out of my mind and returning to real life. "bel canto" by ann patchett is my favorite book (has been for at least 5 years since i read it first) but i think this new novel will give "bel canto" a run for its money! thank you, ann patchett!!!

The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson
    Rachelle Shanrock, February 03, 2011
i loved this book! it is nonfiction that reads like fiction. an interesting biography of a serial killer without being too graphic or violent. and an interesting portrayal of a fascinating time in history that i previously knew nothing about! it was wonderful.
