Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Road
by
Cormac McCarthy

This book was truly one that I "couldn't put down." Featuring McCarthy's concise prose that lacks any "he said, she said" insertions and unnecessary punctuation that risks drawing the reader out of the story, The Road has one of the bleakest post-apocalyptic settings of any such book I have read. That said, the human relationships set therein stand out all the more. This well-crafted story will appeal to readers of many sorts.

Dot-To-Dot, Oregon
by
Sid Miller
Cara ONeil
, December 30, 2009
These poems present unique and vivid perspectives on each Oregon location presented. In this sense, it reminds one of Sufjan Stevens' state-dedicated albums--like Stevens' songs, Miller's poems describe viewpoints or anecdotes that have come to summarize each place for him. Through these expressive, concisely told detours, the reader perceives these places in new ways.
