Miraculous Journey Of Edward Tulane
by
Kate Dicamillo

, October 22, 2014
Kate DiCamillo has a magical way with words and a way of reaching right into your heart and finding the joy in life. My first grader and I read this together and it was so special to share the journey and the transformation of this little toy rabbit. Great characters, wonderful story line and beautiful language. A must for reading aloud with early elementary school children.

Princess & the Pea
by
Xanthe Gresham, Clara Miss

This slightly modernized re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen's tale is gorgeously illustrated by the French artist, Miss Clara. The story and pictures are soft and dream-like with vague, haunting edges. A great book to read to ages kindergarten and older, or to put on the shelf as a work of art.

Runny Babbit Book & Abridged Cd
by
Shel Silverstein

You may be more familiar with Silverstein's classics, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic, but this one is hilarious, too! Once you start talking Runny Babbit talk, you won't be able to stop. I read this to my kindergartner, and at one point, I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. The audio is worth having for a little pick-me-up, too. Listening to selections from Runny Babbit will brighten anyone's rainy day.

Charlie Parker Played

This is a fantastic book for toddlers and preschoolers, to introduce them to jazz, its history and its music. The words and sounds mimic the famous tune of Charlie Parker's 'A Night in Tunisia'. Kids pick up on the sounds and pretty soon repeat the sounds. The sly-looking black cat that makes occasional appearances is also a big hit with little ones.

Three Incestuous Sisters
by
Audrey Niffenegger
AllisonRG
, June 13, 2013
Who knew that Audrey Niffenegger was a visual artist before she was the bestselling author of The Time Traveller's Wife. This graphic novel can be read in about 15 minutes, but the point is to enjoy the illustrations and see how the storyline twists around them. The hair on these sisters is like crackling winter branches, and their simple, sad faces show how really twisted they feel. It is worth it to explore this book if you are a fan of Niffenegger's writing. It gives you a whole new appreciation of the worlds she creates with words. Note that though it is an illustrated book, it's not for young children-- the title should give you a clue.
