Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Soulless Parasol Protectorate 01

A fantastic first effort by Gail Carriger. I read the whole book non-stop (well, I did have to sleep for a few hours). It completely caught me off-guard by its wit, humor and consistently interesting characters and plot twists. I was laughing outloud in every chapter and almost every page had me reading (or wanting to read) quotes to my partner, they were that witty, funny and enjoyable. There is a fair mix of juicy romance, technological wizardry and plain "old" supernatural fun. In fact, one of the enjoyable aspects was her own twists on vampires, werewolves and the like... mixing them with British high society in a most fantastic way. I will be impatiently waiting for the next volume in the Parasol Protectorate to emerge: "Changeless." You can be sure I will snap that up right away! Holiday presents here we come...
