Rilke on Love & Other Difficulties Translations & Considerations of Rainer Maria Rilke

This small tome is one of my favorite and most faithfully helpful books about the work of love. For me, "Rilke on Love and other Difficultes" is a friend who consoles me when I am aching with need for understanding and solace. I get it out and reread it when I need advice about how to be loving, when I am confused about the depths and intensity of my feelings, when I need a pholosophy that moves me toward staying open. Rilke's spaciousness about the need for solitude when "in Love" is so useful. I was reading this out loud to a dear friend the other day and realized for the 100th time how essential RIkle's concepts about love are for developing an individual and functional relatedness to love. I had parts of this work read out loud by my father at my wedding in 1989 and the copy I got then came from Powell's books even though I livd in Missouri at the time. Ah Life, Ah Love... I read this book for the first time in 1981 for a class on Existentialism taught at Stephens College. My friend Martha Perkins and I did a talk show format approach to the work of Rilke and Neitsche. The book captivated me with it's amazing insights on Love as work. The essay three page essay "Dragon Princess" at the ed of the book ends with the sentence, "Pwerhaps everything that frightens us is in its deepest self something helpless that wants help from us."

Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships
by

This book is fabulous! A scientific and sociologically sound look at the mythology of human nature regarding sex. The authors systematically expose the biases of Modernity that have skewed the perceptions of scholars and scientists regarding their ability to look at and be with evidence of non monogamy in human evolution. Fascinating and written with a wry sense of humor,Sex at Dawn also pierces the anthropocentric focus of most theories about the evolution of human civilization, to help us see ourselves as the animals we are.

Eureka, Powell's has this book! I woke up this morning remembering the title and hoped I could find it. I am preparing an event about the elemental nature of sensory perceptions with the organization Love Tribe and I was searching my memory banks for the first text that taught me about the importance of embodiment and offered group games to play. I first found this book in the church library when I was a teenager attending the West Shore Unitarian Church in Westlake, Ohio. It was the 70's and this work arose from the Humanist psychology movement and other personal growth work I associate with the Esalen Institute. The book is full of ways to respect our physical experiences, in other words, exercises for embodiment. The world we live in today, full of disassociation and "attention deficits" almost requires the antidote of presencing = behaviors that intentionally call us back to our present time sensory expereinces. I used the materials in this book to create Sensation parties in my early 20's where people came together to have dyadic experiences focused on sharing 5 objects designed to delight their senses. These formative experiences and the UU tradition of honoring all peoples and all forms of of worship are what created the foundation of my spirituality and work today. Now I am 47 and create events that generate intimacy and embodiment at I honor this book for the profound influence it had on me. I am delighted to be able to purchase it today at Powell's Books.
