Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

60 Quick Knits in Cascade 220
by
Sixth&Spring Books

This is one of those go-to books to have on hand for quick holiday knitting. And cheap. I should mention that the majority of these projects only call for ONE hank of Cascade 220. And that's awesome of those of us who find ourselves not only time strapped but cash strapped when that time of year rolls around. There are projects in here that novice knitters and exerienced knitters alike can whip up. Recommended for your home pattern library. I am giving it four stars only because the photography could be a bit better. It's always better to show the knitting item on a human and for some projects you don't get that.

Sweater Quest: My Year of Knitting Dangerously
by
Martini, Adrienne

There's a few types of "knitting" books out there. There are the type with patterns in them and there are the type of "knitting philosophy" books that the Yarn Harlot (hallowed be her name) have made popular (NYT bestselling even!). This is one of the latter but it's also a personal story. It reads like a blog of a best friend. You're interested and engaged with Adrienne as she goes on a quest to not only knit an ALice Starmore sweater but as she does research into the Fair Isle, the fair isle knitting technique and Alice Starmore herself. For knitting nerds (like myself) it's incredibly cool. I found myself learning things that I thought were a bit dry and boring and have now found them interesting. This book might be the push that I need to tackle a fair isle sweater myself.

New Dead

There's some great interpretations of the zombie mythology in this collection of short stories. It's perfect for a plane ride, a bus ride (watch out for interesting looks from your fellow riders!) anytime that your attention might have to wander a bit. The stories are easy to breeze through - the spacing of the pages is quite large so there's not as many stories here as it appears at first glance. However, it's enough for an entertaining few hours. I give it 3 stars because there is a bit more misogyny here than I'm comfortable with. Of course there is going to be gore and violence in zombie stories but what this book is really lacking are stories written by women and stories featuring women (zombie or not) that don't need to be rescued or punished in some way. That kind of thing gets real old real fast for we female lovers of fiction of all sorts.

Mason Dixon Knitting The Curious Knitters Guide Stories Patterns Advice Opinions Questions Answers Jokes & Pictures
by

Rarely do I find a knitting book with more than one pattern that I think would be not only worth the time and expense to knit but would be flattering or useful. Mason-Dixon Knitting contains many patterns that are useful, flattering and clever - which makes it a great knitting book to have on your shelf. I also like knitting books written by people who don't take the whole thing so seriously. Ann and Kay realize that in the end you're playing with sticks and string and making something that will hopefully end up great. If not, you can always start over.

Bakewise The Hows & Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes
by

Bakewise is one of those cookbooks that I return to time and time again. It's not a splashy cookbook, it's not colourful on the inside (apart from a few pages of photo inserts), but it's jammed full of things that you've always wanted to know about baking. You learn how to troubleshoot when things turn out poorly and you learn what the science is behind the baking. You learn why certain ingredients are called for. It's not very dry like a textbook (but it is heavy like one!) and the author has an engaging conversational style. It's a cookbook that both professionals and amateurs can enjoy. There are so many recipes to mention that are great within the book but I keep coming back to the Rum Cake time and time again. It's a huge hit amongst everyone who has tried it and I enjoy making it quite a bit. I think I almost have it memorized. Bakewise has enhanced my baking quite a bit. I highly recommend it.
