Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. False Friend

Meh. This book takes what should be a very interesting concept and wrings it of its potential with a wandering narrative and arduous prose. I enjoyed Goldberg's "Bee Season", but at times in "The False Friend" she seems to try too hard -- writing to be a writer. At the end of the story I felt as though I'd been on a long ride and dropped off at a deserted crossroads in one of those non-descript rectangular states in middle America. Looking around for signs of life and hearing nothing but crickets. What just happened? How did I get here? What was the point?

The Road
by
Cormac McCarthy

Not much to say about this book that hasn't already been said, but in my opinion, this is one of the best books I've read. Ever. McCarthy's spartan style heightens the sense of desolation & hopelessness of the setting. The fact that specifics of the apocalypse are never explained only serves to make it all the more frightening, and shows the importance of family bonds. At its core, and despite the severe and bone-chilling world McCarthy evokes, that is what this book is about -- the redemptive power of love in one's family, and hope in the face of utter desperation.
