Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mewd A Flavia de Luce Novel
by
Alan Bradley
Suze R
, July 05, 2017
The latest book in the Flavia de Luce series. If you have not read this series before start with The Sweetness At the Bottom of the Pie. In this book Flavia is now 12 and returning to England after a stint at boarding school in Canada.Luckily she gets her mojo back when she discovers a dead body in a mysterious circumstance. There is a melancholy undertone to this book due to her father's illness and the time being close to the holiday season thatis very different now.Flavia is growing up and I enjoy seeing her awareness of her sleuthing ability and her relationships with the adults in her life who are relating to her less as a child and more of an equal.

How to Make 100 Paper Flowers: Ideas and Instruction for Folding, Cutting, and Simple Sculptures
by
Maria Noble
Suze R
, May 06, 2014
Very clear photos and text guide you well in learning this craft.I really liked that the book was broken up by materials and techniques.I originally bought it to learn the crepe paper technique for making realistic flowers, of which there are many examples provided.THere are also techniques using other materials like paper napkins and scrapbook paper. The color photos are beautiful and there is always a clear photo of the finished product. It gives you many ideas for weddings, the home and any celebration you might think of. I like that there are several beautiful rose patterns, since Portland is the City of Roses. If you pair this book with Paper to Petal, you will have a lifetime of ideas for making paper flowers. I highly recommend this book for people with all levels of experience.

Paper to Petal 75 Whimsical Paper Flowers to Craft by Hand

This is one of the best books I have found for all levels of experience for making paper flowers. These flowers are great for weddings, parties and any other celebration you might think of.The book has patterns, suggested types of materials and does not push certain brands, which I really like.It is a beautiful book and will give you hours of ideas and crafting pleasure. If you pair this with Maria Noble's book How To Make 100 Paper Flowers, you will be able to broaden your ideas even more. I highly recommend this book if you have any interest at all in learning this craft.

Aviators Wife A Novel
by
Melanie Benjamin
Suze R
, May 16, 2013
I didn't know a lot about the Lindberg's story other than the kidnapping and Anne's book Gift From The Sea.I did not really have a lot to compare the story to so I have to say I enjoyed the book and found it very entertaining.I could glimpse some "nuggets" of reality, but honestly did not feel the book was trying to portray the real story. It did inspire me to find out more about the real details of their lives.I had not known that Anne was an aviator herself and quite a pioneering woman in many ways, albeit conflicted.I recommend reading this book, but leaving the true historical details behind until you finish it.

Homespun Style

This book is gorgeous and you will want to keep it nearby for daily inspiration.I read about this book on the Attic 24 blog where I am constantly inspired also.If you love color and eclectic finds you will love this book.If you tend more to very modern sparse settings this might not be the book for you. With spring garage sale season approaching this book will help you see your new finds with fresh eyes and open your eyes to ways of using very ordinary objects.Highly recommend this book.

Felties How To Make 18 Cute & Fuzzy Frie
by
Nelly Pailloux

, November 17, 2011
This book is FUN! Some beyond cute projects to make gifts for your friends with excellent taste.Spend some cold dark winter nights with this book and some felt and you'll have it made.A note:some of the materials other than felt (i.e. certain buttons or beads) may be a hard find, so you may need to improvise.Don't worry about having the "exact" look as the book, just have fun.A good companion book for your friends on the darker side is Zombie Felties.

Red Hook Road

This was a difficult book to read at times, the story is about such an unexpected loss at a time of great joy and celebration. It follows the pain and healing of the families of the wedding party for over a year after the tragedy.Beautiful writing through the story of sadness and shock at the sudden unexpected death of a young bride and groom in the hour after their wedding.

Strange Piece of Paradise
by
Terri Jentz
Suze R
, October 10, 2011
A woman and her friend were cycling the Bike Centennial in 1977,starting in Oregon. They only made it to Cline Falls State Park near Redmond. The book is about the brutal axe attack when they were camping there and the writer's journey 15 years later to heal through going back to the past. The crime had never been solved, but most people in the town thought they knew the person responsible. This is not an easy book to read but well worth it.An amazing story.

Dharma Bums

I've revisited this book several times.I love the way Kerouac captures the feeling of the time he writes about, the 50's of the Beat generation in SF and Berkeley.I love the characters in this book, especially Japhy, who is based on Gary Snyder. There is a sweetness to this story that is a little sad considering how Kerouac ended up in real life.

Not your usual cute felt creations. These are a little twisted but very cool. They require a variety of felt colors and a little organization to get started, but the direction and photos get you off to a good start.

Composed A Memoir
by
Rosanne Cash
Suze R
, August 15, 2010
I read this book while listening to some of Rosanne's recent music. Her writing is poetry,as is her songwriting.I lost my father during September also,so her writing about her father's passing and her song When September Comes really touch me.Her story of how her fear of snakes came to be is great for anyone who has had that particular fear growing up.She combines humor about her life while at the same time sharing some of the most painful moments of her life with you.I highly recommend this book whether you have listened to her music or not. After reading this you WILL want to listen to her music.

Dandelion Wine
by
Ray Bradbury
Suze R
, August 15, 2010
Bradbury at his finest. It captures the bittersweet feelings of growing up and the passage of time via the seasons as a boy in a small town in the midwest recounts a summer from his youth. It captures the feeling you had as a child when summer began and the edge of melancholy most people feel as it slips away into autumn.

And She Was
by
Dyson, Cindy
Suze R
, November 28, 2009
This book caught my eye at first with the winning title from the well known Talking Heads song. The book has little to do with the Talking Heads, but is about one woman's dark journey of healing set in the Aleutians. It blends the past history of women who have lived there with the main characters gritty journey to self discovery. It's not an easy read but is well worth spending time with.
