Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Sense of Style the Thinking Persons Guide to Writing in the 21st Century
by
Steven Pinker
Gwen Urey
, November 30, 2014
How curious! Powell's web site includes an entry for Stephen Pinker's new book Sense of Style. However, the site draws the wrong material to accompanying the title. The accompanying material elaborates on the classic, Elements of Style. Of course this is confusing, and even more so because Pinker is an outspoken critic of the latter title.

Beautiful Place to Die
by
Malla Nunn
Gwen Urey
, October 20, 2013
Historical fiction and crime fiction in one great package! Nunn reveals detective Emmanuel Cooper's complexity one layer at a time, as events expose him to new and greater challenges as a sleuth and a human being. The historical moment-relatively early during apartheid with strains of post-War Europe--provide an interesting historical context that Nunn weaves skillfully into the plot. Both the good guys and the bad guys are three-dimensional, allowing the suspense to be intensified for the reader who is trying always to figure out who-dun-what. The characters share a bond with the stunning natural environment of South Africa's veld, made vivid in the course of the plot. Seasons change, the motivations of individual characters take form, good is teased from bad, evil remains a threat, and suddenly the book is finished. This is a great read.

An engaging read packed with history. Many first-person accounts of life on the plains and the struggle to maintain a culture against all odds.
