A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present
by
Howard Zinn

, January 21, 2012
A Must-Read, for Anyone Unafraid of the Truth! (Is there a "Nobel Prize" in History? The late Zinn deserves It!). This book--though (thankfully) NO "Ken Burns-style" History--is (at least to THIS Immigrant of 37 years, and a World History Buff), Better, more Instructive, more Accurate and Comprehensive than ANY History Classes I've ever taken, in 2 Countries, and be they Classes and/or Hundreds of Podcasts by "piddly" Universities, such as Stanford, Oxford, UoM (MN). I never did like Burns' PBS "movies," and "specials," anyway,,, they made me Gag in their sugar-ladden ("feel-good") "History." As a Journalist, by Training--and someone addicted to Philosophy, (particularly Logic, Critical Thinking, etc)--This Writer has found Nothing that has Contradicted my Own Self-Arrived Hypotheses, Theories and Conclusions, in my experience, as a Immigrant to this Country, many of which I'd myself have Written about, while still a University student. Anyone willing to "remove the scales from their eyes," and leave Ideologies at their front door, reading this book with Impartiality, will soon find that--at best--everything... EVERYTHING we've all been taught in School since Childhood, was nothing more than an Idealized "Ken Burns-ised" version of the Truth. The late Zinn does not mince words! Nor does he patronizingly treat the reader as Children. Rather, using abundant Documentation and First hand accounts, he lays out the Truth of the United States of America, (indeed, of all 3 American Continents). This is a Book that requires both Reflection, Self-Awareness of Your Own Place in History, Quiet Solitude (I make it my Weekday Breakfast Time), and in little sips. It is NOT a Book intended to be Wolfed Down quickly then forgotten about. Of course, as Written elsewhere, this book is bound to garner heavy Criticism. After all, who likes to have their Lifelong, Cherished carefully-woven Myths, we were taught, smashed down in the face of Truths--especially, as given by the Voices of those most affected by it, (the People, on Whose Backs History is invariably made)? I for one, prefer THIS over Sugar, any time! This is a Keeper!

Zorba The Greek
by
Nikos Kazantzakis

This is one of those Books you'll read and Re-read so many times, it'll fall apart on you; you’ll need to replace it, every so often. As an inveterate BookWorm--who's extremely picky in my Choices of Literature--I have read Zorba the Greek a few times, already, (at least once in Portuguese, as a Teenager; a couple of times, in English, as an Adult). Zorba is to me, a Larger-than-Life, inspirational Character like Few Others, and undoubtedly, a Major Classic. Kazantsakis filled the Book with Zorba's Philosophies of Life (simple, yet, potent as they are), always prompting me to need a Notebook, and Pen nearby, for copying Quotes, for my own Inspiration. Indeed, there's one, on page 292 (1st. Edition), I loved so much I included it in all my Literature, as a Performer Advocate for the Invisibly dis-Abled, and one of my all-time Favorites, regarding Adversity: "You won't get into my soul! I shan't open the door to you! You won't put my fire out; you won't tip me over!" (Zorba, Kazantsakis - 1st. Ed. Touchstone). I've recently uncovered my Old copy of this Favorite Book of Mine, (now missing its first 50 pages), and began reading it again, yet...those missing fifty pages keep "screaming at me:'Read us! Read us'!". So, I WANT my 50 missing Pages back, and have ordered another Copy of it. A Word of Warning about the First Edition: Its binding is extremely Delicate, and the Book easily separated into Loose Sections, Chapters, which is how I lost the first 50 pages. Otherwise, Highly Recommended! A Classic, for sure!

Fixing Climate: What Past Climate Changes Reveal about the Current Threat--And How to Counter It
by
Wallace S. Broecker and Robert Kunzig

, December 03, 2011
This book is a morose near-monologue, mediocre piece of writing, describing the Life of a Climate Scientist, more like an Eulogistical Biography of sorts, than a Factual Book, about Climate Change. Frankly, I've had to force myself to continue reading it; have skipped entire Chapters, came back, became irritated by its prosaic narrative style, (not factually-scientific, at all; put it aside, again, and made it my "Book of Last Resort," for reading whenever I have nothing else to read. This is NOT an Exciting Prose, nor a well-written...whatever it is. In my Opinion, buying this Book, about Climate Change, and how to "Fix It"--though it *might* have those Issues addressed, somewhere in the morass of useless prose--was to me, at least, a Waste of my Money, and Time. Definitely NOT a keeper for my Personal Library! Finally, for those who know (and Understand) a great Classic: "Plato's The Republic," think of this "Fixing Climate Book..." as if it were Plato's Disciple Adeimatus, sycophantically writing a book about his Mentor, Plato. This will give you some Idea of how poorly this book and its Ideas is presented. ______________ NOTE: Adeimantus, in Plato's "The Republic"--an alleged Pupil of his--was in my eyes, but a wide-eyed "Yes-boy/Yes-Man," hence my Analogy. (I've read The Republic over 10 times, and have yet to change my Mind about this).
