Unmentionable the Victorian Ladys Guide to Sex Marriage & Manners
by
Therese Oneill
cardprincess
, May 19, 2017
Wow, I knew I would most likely enjoy this book as I like quirky old facts, old wives tales and history about women, but I completely loved it! There were a lot of ridiculous beliefs floating around in the Victorian Era, and probably a few good pieces of information that we have forgotten. (Hello, parasols!) I hope that Therese Oneill writes a sequel, I would love to read about Victorian child rearing! If you have even the most passing interest in women's history or The Victorian Era, you will adore this book!

Ugly Girls A Novel
by
Lindsay Hunter
cardprincess

Two delinquent teens, one with a disabled brother, the other living in a trailer park with her alcoholic mom and prison guard stepfather. A stalker with a Norman Bates sort of relationship with his own mom...This book is a rush, a sugar high. There is never a dull moment...I can't express how good it is!

Little Friend
by
Donna Tartt

Harriett is trying to solve the murder of her brother which happened when she was a baby. Super intelligent, she seems to be 12 going on 25 and having this child as the main character of the novel makes it exciting, but never hard to follow. It was my first Donna Tartt book but I will be reading more.

Hollywood Book Of Death
by
James Robert Parish
cardprincess
, November 15, 2014
This book covers the lives and deaths of celebrities from the early 1900's up until current times. Each star has a 2 or 3 page biography about their personal lives and their work, and each story tells how the celebrity passed away. Lots of great pictures and just enough personal information about each player to stay completely fascinating without rambling on. I've never been one to "follow the stars" and this book was worth it to be able to put the faces with the famous names through great photography alone. To learn a little about each person made it completely compelling. It was impossible to put down!

Real Illusions: Stories
by
Robert Swartwood

If you are a fan of short stories of the sci-fi type, you will enjoy this book very much as I did. The first story made me want to call in sick to work and stay home reading all day! Not all of the subsequent stories lived up to the wonder of the first one (at least in my opinion) but there were other incredible, creepy stories and even my least favorite ones were still good.

The Automat
by
Cristina Martin

Horace Gray is unhappily married to a verbally abusive, alcoholic wife. He had pretty much resigned himself to a life of misery until the day he saw a pair of dark, mysterious eyes peering out at him from behind the automat wall. In no time Horace is completely obsessed with the lady attached to the eyes. He takes risks and goes out of his way to meet her while his wife meets a "tragedy" of her own. I love this book because it sticks to the plot and you never know what will happen next. I really enjoyed the unusual setting too (I never heard of an automat before I heard of this book, and that in itself was something cool to learn about). It was one of those rare books that I just couldn't wait to get back to every night. I usually read a book a month but went through this one in a week.

The Short Fiction of William H. Coles 2001-2011
by
William H. Coles
cardprincess
, November 02, 2013
Finding this book was the first I heard of William H. Coles, and wow, his writing is something! There are creepy short stories about a wide array of characters...be warned, not all of the characters are decent people, some are rather unsavory and criminal, but that makes for a good story if you ask me. The stories really made me think (and they made me think about weird things that wouldn't ordinarally cross my mind).

Joyland

The latest by Stephen King! It's only 283 pages, which is unusual from the author of books like "The Stand". Joyland is easy to read and can be completely devoured in a weekend.

When It Happens to You A Novel in Stories
by
Molly Ringwald
cardprincess
, April 01, 2013
The name of the author caught my attention and I'm glad that it did. Molly Ringwald is as good of a writer as she is an actress. The book is a collection of short stories that tie together as a novel. When you start reading the story of a new character, you wonder how they will tie in to the previous characters, and they always do. Entertaining and very clever!

Bird in Hand
by
Christina Baker Kline
cardprincess
, February 20, 2013
This book starts with the character, Allison, having a few drinks and being involved in a car accident where a young boy loses his life. Though Allison is guilty for being on the road after drinking, it was the other car that ran a red light and slammed into her. That is not to say that Allison doesn't have to struggle with a lot of guilt there after. It is riviting from the beginning, and the plot grows from there. The entire book isn't foucsed only on the accident, we get a peek into the interesting lives and challenges of the four main characters. Very interesting!

Resort
by
Bentley Little
cardprincess
, July 22, 2011
Imagine being an average working man and saving up to treat your family to a vacation in a luxury resort out in the middle of the dessert. Only when you get there things seem to "feel a little off". Hotel staff behaves oddly, you see things out of the corner of your eye, and so on. Bentley Little builds great characters. They are your neighbors, your brothers, your friends. You feel that you are right there with them as the chill runs down your spine.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Such intense mystery surrounds those who go missing. My biggest complaint is it is a short 237 pages that flew by and left me wanting more story.

False Friend
by
Myla Goldberg
cardprincess
, January 10, 2011
This book is told from the perspective of a woman in her early 30's replaying the events of a tragic accident that seemed to have claimed the life of her best friend 20 years earlier. The transitions from past to present times are seamless but not confusing. Aside from not wanting to put the book down because you can't wait to find out what actually happened, the details of "friendships" between young girls are intriguing. I imagine all female readers can relate in some way or another to the trials of interacting with peers during these formative years.

Insanity Offense How Americas Failure to Treat the Seriously Mentally Ill Endangers Its Citizens

Wow, the facts in this book are astonishing! These stories should be discussed on 60 Minutes. Our government has been grossly failing to protect the mentally ill, and to protect others from them.

A great collection of short horror genre stories. They are gripping and realastic (no crazy stuff like demons flying out of the characters noses). Just wonderfully creepy.
