Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Night Circus
by

This book grows before you, as a tree would, pushing its way slowly and inevitably into you, then through you. It begins small, unprepossessing. One single bud that branches and twines until it is everywhere and everything and you are entwined within. And you are so happy to be living inside. This is a love story but not a story of love. It is a story about life. A life that can be if only we can believe it. Then, when you find this is the only novel she has written you cry.

A Dance with Dragons: Song of Ice and Fire 5
by
George R R Martin
Paul Morin
, July 04, 2012
While the comparisons to Tolkien are justified, this book and the preceding four have more in common with the Tudors than Middle Earth. Yet both weave a brilliant tapestry that pulls the reader into its world and compels them through. If you have read the A Song of Fire and Ice then this is the next course of a sumptuous banquet that you have been looking for. And like every exquisite meal it leaves one craving more. Write Mr. Martin, write. Please!

Pattern Recognition: Blue Ant 1
by
William Gibson
Paul Morin
, June 28, 2012
In the gallery of books that is the world, the jewels are often lost amid the dross. It is an exquisite joy to stumble across such a jewel and recognize that one has joined those who have relished such. Pattern Recognition by William Gibson is just such a jewel. How Gibson writes a book in the language open to all but crafts something so unique, so new is beyond my small capacity to understand but I appreciate his attaining that all writers must strive for. This is a mystery, without seeming to be a mystery. This is a look into a seldom visited world but obliquely and without editorializing. What this book is really is a joy. A new view of our world that firmly inserts the joy into enjoy. Read this book. You will not be sorry.

Blood Meridian
by
Cormac McCarthy
Paul Morin
, April 20, 2012
If the mark of a great book or author is being enveloped by a different reality, then Blood Meridian is one of the best books I have ever read and Cormac McCarthy is one of the greats. Based in a time that was and a place that is this books pulls you into it's story as few others have. Ostensibly a story about The Kid it is a moving panorama, dark and apochryphal. One rides with these men as silent witness, struggling to survive as they do. Dark, dirty and dismal, one is loath to acknowledge the truth at the core of the story. The truth paints this reality with a patina that roots it in our world while we hope that it is not so.
