Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Dance of the Dissident Daughter A Womans Journey from Christian Tradition to the Sacred Feminine

I adored this book, it is a book you will continue to pick up and enjoy again and again. if it doesn't speak to you right at the first few pages, it probably isn't time to read it. But if you are drawn in, you will be relieved that someone has finally written down your deepest story, your discomfort with organized religion will suddenly be explained, and your journey will be validated in the most beautiful of ways!

I haven't even finished this book, but I must say, it is extremely well-written (there must be a better descriptive than that) and yes, Harry Hole is an absorbing and fascinating character as the detective. It is so well written that you can feel and taste the very fabric of this narrative. It demands to be read with complete absorption, so don't make the mistake of taking it to the beach with you this summer... it would be a waste of a perfectly good beach. You might miss your entire vacay! The ability of this author to draw you in, quite literally, is breath taking. Enough. I'm going back to one of the best mystery books I have read in a very long time. And I read a LOT of them.

I loved this book! Made me smile many times, made me wish I was there with them in the car. Perhaps the Rinpoche was a fictional character, but the way he was portrayed made me wish he was real. Any book that makes you examine your own world, the way you view it, is alright with me. And, a little laughter, some sweet moments, memories triggered for the reader, can't be overlooked. A delightful, heart-searching read!

A fantastic book that transformed my view of the world, and the importance of women's roles in their own lives and that of their daughters! You MUST read to the end of this book, don't get discouraged by how you feel in the middle. IT WILL make you mad, but that is all part of the importance of this book.
