Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
    Vendela, January 01, 2011
Beyond a doubt the best book I've read this year; conceivably one of the best I've ever read. It is charming and hard-edged; surpising and predictable; informationally politcally, medically and also a romantic story fro the POV's of many of the characters. My Puddly vote for 2010

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
    Vendela, December 15, 2010
Cutting for Stone is undoubtedly one of the best books I have ever read. What makes this book so extraordainry -- in addition to author Verghese's clear writing skill -- is his ability to integrate numerous characters, while melding varied stories and making the environment one where you live at that very minute. He incorporates medical knowledge, with political awareness and compassion, and a very astute awareness of human nature. Add to this a strong sense of suspense and the ability to manipulate the reader with a variety of viable turns and twists, some of which are a surprsing prectiability required of story. I cannot wait to read more of this author -- he is literary, and technical and I;ve not read anything like this in a very long time.

City of Falling Angels by John Berendt
    Vendela, December 02, 2006
This is one of the most exciting books I've read in a long time. It satisfies the need for buzz and gossip as well as a love of history and place. Venice and it's opera house are the prime characters and if you love Italy, and in particular Venice's mystery, beauty and aura, this is a book you will not put down. Berendt's humor and reverence for this place addresses literary, political and social figures. If any negative comment, it left me wanting to know much more about Venice and the creatures that roam its canals and bridges. The book also made me want to go back to my favorite place in Italy to explore it through new eyes.
