Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Its So Easy & Other Lies

Wow! I was blown away by this book. No, not because I was thinking dumb rock star that blew it to only get a second chance. This book was a lot more than that! As a budding bassist / hobbyist I was drawn to this book on a lot of levels, and being a GNR fan was just one of many. Duff writes in a very natural voice that was refreshing and original. It was a fascinating account of what someone who is driven and an artist will have to go through. I liked all the stories, the interactions, and how he put the blame clearly on his own shoulders. But, surprisingly, he is very humble, and perhaps does not give enough credit to himself. Without having met him, I see that he is not only a first rate rock star, but more importantly a great dad, loving husband, intelligent analytical finance writer, and a wonderful human being! I have recommended this book to everyone who has asked about books, or anytime there is a conversation that would enlighten some people.

Wow! What a slow but effective mystery in the small town of Perry Hollow, the characters have a lot of time to build, and life can be interesting outside of the big city (Philly in this case). A very interesting cast of characters has been set and expanded upon in snippets throughout the book. I have been hearing the buzz that a second installment is due out this fall! Who knows, maybe Kat Campbell, Chief of Police of Perry Hollow and Lt. Nick Donnelly may further explore their relationship. This was a good suspenseful book that took it’s time and left no stone unturned.

I really loved this book! To think of an educated middle aged man with such a tremendous knowledge of pot just goes to show you we never lose the kid in us. As a father of a young daughter, I truly loved the thought that went into pages 146-7, and I loved the dialogue in his head when he saw teenage boys. Those thoughts must be universal! Great story; I cannot wait to read more of his works. As an ex-Navy supply guy, if you heard his journey in a bar it would not even be worthy of “sea story status”; but in his book it works!

Thieves of Manhattan

This is quite the journey of an everyday struggling writer that gets caught up in the caper of his life. You get the sense with this far fetched story that the barista, your server, even the guy next to you on the train could be the struggling writer. This is a very funny story. Like lasagna, without giving too much away, there are layers of repressed rage, guilt, self-doubt, and revenge that get served up when there is the least control.

The Serialist

A great first novel by David Gordon! This is a story about a hack writer who has big dreams, but little in the way of method to launch himself there. There was a lot of gore, but a great story about an everyday guy who works hard, uses his smarts, and does the best he can with what he has been dealt. This is an interesting look into how many of my friends who majored in literature may still be plying their talents.

Wow! This was a great introduction to the world and inner workings of Micah Dalton, a "cleaner" for the company. This is James Bond, without the British pomp and polish. I can not wait to see if he has any future “encounters” with Ms Vasari. I will be sure to read the rest of his adventures!
