Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

1984

This is Part two of my personal End Of The World trilogy (Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, 1984, Ayn Rand's Anthem). I first read this book in middle school and I have not been able to enjoy modern technological conveniences since. ATMs, debit cards, surveillance systems, "nanny-cams", all of it. It terrifies me to see us coming to this.

American Gods
by
Neil Gaiman

This is a book I’ll have to try to read again. Maybe I just couldn’t get that into it. The ideas were interesting and Neil Gaiman is a great story teller. Well, now I want to go read it again because I’m sure it’s better than I gave it credit for.

Devil In the White City UK

Kind of a story about a crazy serial killer who was operating in Chicago during the World’s Fair in 1893, I think. The best parts in the whole book concerned trying to organize all of the diverse aspects to create the most amazing fair in the world.

The Wee Free Men: Discworld: Tiffany Aching 1

Wonderful book! This book is what you would get if Labyrinth (the David Bowie movie) had a baby with Fried Green Tomatoes then gave it to Tolkien to raise. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Idiot Girl & the Flaming Tantrum of Death Reflections on Revenge Germophobia & Laser Hair Removal
by
Laurie Notaro

This is a stellar book! I laughed out loud (and earned some dirty looks) while reading about laser hair removal. I cried (and earned some apprehensive looks) when I read about her dog. Laurie Notaro is brilliant! I can't wait for her next book.

Bonk The Curious Coupling of Science & Sex
by
Roach, Mary
Margareto

Mary Roach is the latest addition to my list of authors to keep an eye on. In Bonk, Ms. Roach manages to make science (a subject I just can't get in to) seem accessible and endlessly funny! I laughed (and cringed) my way through whole chapters on erectile dysfunction, penile implants, and swine insemination. You just can't beat that!

A. J. Jacobs

I love A. J. Jacobs! This book secured his position on my list of favorite authors. His writing is charming, intelligent, and not lacking humility. It really makes me admire his wife for putting up with it all.

Spooky Little Girl

Laurie Notaro

This is a great book! I literally could not put it down until I was done reading it. I laughed, I cried, a good time was had by all! This is the second book I've read by Laurie Notaro (the first was The Idiot Girl's Action Adventure Club) and she may just turn in to my new favorite author. Now I have to run out and get the rest of her books!

Wishful Drinking

Fisher, Carrie

A good book. Carrie Fisher is witty, even with only parts of her memory intact. I'm going to get a copy for my mom.

I See Rude People One Womans Outrageous
by
Alkon, Amy
Margareto

This book should be mandatory reading! I want to buy hundreds of copies and tape them to the stalls in public bathrooms! I feel so much better knowing that I'm not the only person who is fed up with the way people treat each other. I'm going to give this to everyone I know for Chrictmas and birthdays and any other gift-giving occasion I can think of.

Great look into a kind of life I never thought about before. The writing made me feel like I could identify with the characters and their situation.
