Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Guardian of the Dead

In this tale, the main character, Ellie is in a boarding school near Christchurch, New Zealand. Her parents are on an extended trip because her mother has recently recovered from cancer. She is a devote daughter and friend. She has a crush on a handsome, but reclusive boy from her school, but soon finds out that he is not all that he seems to be. The mystery enfolds and about 2/3rds of the way through, I could not put it down. I will recommend this to young adults you love mythology and folklore, great settings, and characters who are less than perfect but perfect because they are less than perfect (if you know what I mean). This falls into my "I wish I could have written this book" list.

I Am The Messenger

Australian cabdriver, Ed Kennedy, is 19, living on his own without much of a plan for his future. He lives with his rank-smelling dog, The Doorman, and longs for a deeper relationship with his best friend, Audrey. After he stops a bank robbery he begins to receive anonymous messages in his mail box. He goes to the addresses given in the messages but once he has arrived he must determine what he must do to create positive change. As the book progresses, Ed begins to deal with his relationships with his friends and family. The book is about personal empowerment and personal connection without being silly or fluffy. This is great choice for book clubs. There is a bit of violence and sex. This is a good choice for older teens and adults who like a book with both dark and light moments, a fast-paced storyline, and great dialogue.
