Curse Dark As Gold
by
Elizabeth Bunce

, February 16, 2010
This was the ultimate novel to hide away with for the weekend. Once I started I just couldn't put it down. Lush characters, historically accurate, yet set in a fantasy world on the cusp of an industrial revolution, and superb writing artistry by first time author Elizabeth Bunce. The former PNW author was awarded the 2009 ALA William C. Morris Award, and the novel was picked as an Oprah's Book Club Kids Reading List selection, a Smithsonian Notable Book and a best book for 2008. The author's sense of time and place mixes seemlessly with her evident vast knowledge of old world superstitions and life in a town centered around a textile mill which may or may not be under the curse from a familiar fairy tale. Haunting, filled with real-life romance and gripping characters. A must read for fantasy readers and lovers of fairy tale retellings. A+

A timeless story and a one-of-a-kind voice. Incredibly nuanced supporting characters like Boo Radley and the best trial book ever written. Accessible by any audience. Great for teens and adults.

McCandless's story and Krakauer's superb storytelling skills will make this haunting story stay with you forever. Inspiring, yet a lesson in the price to pay for the ultimate risk and never will the lesson "always be prepared" likely be illustrated so vividly elsewhere.

One of the best books for teens ever written by first time author Hinton. Easy to relate to characters for young and old alike. Should be on every library's "classics" list.
