Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Interview with the Vampire: Vampire Chronicles 1
by
Anne Rice
Kristin Olson
, January 29, 2010
Anne Rice is without a doubt the queen of vampire novels. She creates a world that is both beautiful and disturbing and full of subtext (unlike today's genre of vapid, teenage romantic vampire fiction). Nor are her characters simple monsters; they are metaphors for lost souls in a world without clear meaning. Interview with The Vampire is an amazing book, and I recommend it to any one who is looking for an intellectually stimulating and intriguing read.

Lolita
by
Vladimir Nabokov

Lolita is a modern classic. Nabokov manages to do something that view authors rarely accomplish: make such a taboo subject human and even delightfully funny at times. Definitely one of my favorite books of all time.
