Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Your Mother Was Right: All the Great Advice You Tried to Forget
by

This book is an excellent source of fun and practical tips, from how to keep crust crispy when reheating pizza to how to tell someone you aren't interested in them in quite that way. My friend and I purchased a copy and had so much fun with it that we read tips out loud to each other for hours, and then I went back and bought another one for my sister's birthday!

Maze Runner 02 Scorch Trials
by
James Dashner

The Scorch Trials, the second book in the Maze Runner Trilogy, might be even better than the first, which is a true feat. In the second book the mystery surrounding Wicked deepens; you learn even more about the organization, only to start questioning what you think you know. Once you're done you'll be dying for the finale!

Princess of Glass

If you're looking for a dose of fairy tale entertainment, this book is an excellent choice. It's a light and fun princess story, with all of the ingredients you would hope for, like a charming prince and clever princess. Cinderella even comes into the picture, but not in the typical way.

I am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil & I Want to Be Your Class President

This is definitely the most hilarious and clever book I have read in a long time. I knew it was a good sign when the guy who was checking me out starting laughing again, remembering the awesomeness of the book, when he only looked at the cover! It's so ridiculous that it's magical. If you love to laugh, you'll definitely want to read this book over and over and over again.

Paranormalcy 01
by

As someone who tends to shy away from straight-up paranormal fiction, I actually found this book to be extremely enjoyable. Evie is just your typical teenage girl who happens to have a not so typical job, and her narration will make you laugh while you learn more about her and the unusual occurrences around her.

As someone who is always looking for a good mystery, this book was a surprisingly excellent find. Reading this book is just a lot of fun! Mary is a wonderfully feisty lead, and you'll grow to love her as you try to figure out who the real culprit is. You'll want to have the next book on hand so you can start it as soon as you finish with the first!

The Book Thief
by
Markus Zusak
islandwahinee
, September 21, 2011
This book is simply beautiful. I put off reading it for several years because I never felt I was in quite the right mood to read about the Holocaust, but now I regret that I didn't read it sooner. Told from the perspective of death, Zusak wraps you into the story of a little girl growing up in Nazi Germany, and make a difficult subject become real. Ironically, it is through death's descriptions that you are able to see the true beauty and value of life. A heavy but inspiring read loaded with meaning, it is a masterful work that anyone would benefit from reading -- it is by no stretch of the imagination just a young adult book.

Heist Society 02 Uncommon Criminals
by
Ally Carter

The perfect sequel to Heist Society, Uncommon Criminals is a wonderful read for anyone who enjoys a witty heist adventure. Following Kat and her crew is fantastic fun, and you'll never be able to guess what will happen next! It's a perfect blend of action, comedy, mystery and, of course, some boy problems. Ally Carter is one of my absolute favorite authors, and I think this might be her best book yet. I always recommend her books to any friend who is looking for something new to read, and I haven't had anyone not love her yet!
