Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Martian

I first read a review in Entertainment this Week about this book and I am thinking -what? But this book had me up several nights till I finished it. The narrator is McGyver like in his abilities to survive and the efforts back on earth reminiscent of Apollo 13-a true nailbiter till the very end. Lots of scientific detail (accuracy has been questioned but was still enough to keep the scientific among us fact checking) to make this qualify as "hard" science fiction but lots of humanity in it. The moving from the different points of view kept the action going. Highly recommended for those who read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy.

Too Big to Fail The Inside Story of How Wall Street & Washington Fought to Save the Financial System & Themselves
by
Andrew Ross Sorkin

Financial books I thought would be boring but this is so amazing that it is hard to believe it was true. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I could not put it down. The whole issue of the bailout has been reported and discussed but all the players on both sides are shown with all their flaws in a life or death struggle for America's economy. Mr. Sorkin keeps the tension and the intrigue up through the end.

Sacred Games

Sacred Games was an awesome book. The intertwining of lives between the detective and Ganesh and where they had come from and where they ended up was priceless. It was an illuminating look into life in India and its culture. I couldn't put it down. It was rather like the Godfather in India in terms of storylines. I hope Vikram Chandra writes more!
