Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. This is a memorable novel that tells the story of several generations of a family after emigrating to the U.S. Ursula Hegi developed characters that are well fleshed-out, whether you like them or not. I really enjoyed this book, especiallly since the ending was not predictable. Ms. Hegi's writing is incredibly engaging as she gives us a peak into this families triumphs and tragedies.

I started reading this book whilst on vacation. It was supposed to be for my layover. I could not put this book down and was finished with it before I even hit the airport. The characters are well developed and you find yourself rooting for them. This story is heartrending and heartwarming; the ending was a surprise, unusual to not predict the ending before you get there. I loved it and recommend it as an engaging read.

Stories From The Vinyl Cafe
by
Stuart McLean

I first became aware of "The Vinyl Cafe" while listening to the CBC with my Mom. Suart McLean is an absolutely wonderful storyteller. His books are on par with his radio show. The Vinyl Cafe books are centered around Dave and his record shop. These short vignettes show Dave and his family in absurdly hilarious predicaments. Most stories in this book are funny, some are touching, and all leave you feeling warm and fuzzy, so to speak. I would recommend any of these Vinyl Cafe books to someone looking for a light read.
