Morgan Park Academy: A History (Volume I)
by
Barry Kritzberg

, October 21, 2014
This is not a literary masterpiece, but gets five stars because it accomplishes it's purpose so admirably. Morgan Park Academy is a co-ed, progressive private school in Chicago that was once a military academy. It has a long, rich history that Kritzberg (a teacher at the school for decades) brings to life. Every old institution must have it's wonderful stories. We are lucky that Kritzberg was able to bring these to life for us. The book helps us understand what rich history might live in our neighborhood too.

Shambhala The Sacred Path of the Warrior
by
Chogyam Trungpa

People across the nation know about Buddhism these days, and Chogyam Trungpa is one of the pioneers that made that interest happen. This book's cover and title make it sound exotic, but inside is practical, wise and straight-forward psychological insight. This book will have a profound impact on your life.

Schools Of Hope Developing Mind &
by
Douglas H Heath
ekimyarrum
, October 21, 2014
Douglas Heath based this book on visits to hundreds of schools around the world, and a 35 year long study about what leads to success and happiness. His account of what's wrong with education, in the first third of the book, is perhaps a bit dated. His solutions are not dated at all, and will be of great value to every educator. Heath is one of the great recent thinkers about education, and he just recently died. This book provides convincing evidence that obsession with test scores will not lead to the fully mature adults that we need to be good parents and citizens, as well as successful professionals. Highly recommended to anyone interested in education.
