Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Tenth Good Thing About Barney

I first read this book when I was working in a preschool daycare classroom. It helps young children understand and cope with the grief at the loss of a pet, gives them some concrete things to do (think of 10 Good Things about their friend, which helps them focus on the good memories), and helps them understand the circle of life. Even as an adult, decades later, I find myself using some of the lessons learned (one of our cats died yesterday, and he’s now in our garden helping the flowers grow). I’m sorry some people here have such negative views of the theme, but I’ve found it does help young children feel better after a loss.

A Long, Long Sleep
by
Anna Sheehan

This is one of the BEST first novels I've ever read. It's a post-apocalyptic retelling of the "Sleeping Beauty" tale, but with a lead character whose inner strength helps her overcome a lifetime's negative programming. The mystery behind her situation is compelling, and the action exciting. I particularly appreciate seeing a "self-rescuing princess" in a YA book: it's a great antidote to all the "Twilight"-esque passive heroines in teen fiction these days! Also note that Anna Sheehan is an Oregon author (she lives near Drain).
