Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Darth Maul Shadow Hunter Star Wars
by
Michael Reaves
Bauknin
, August 07, 2009
Darth Maul is a character I like. Since this is a prequel, however, and we all know his fate, the character's fate is never really in question. You also never get to delve too deeply into his mind. That doesn't matter, though, because this book is still worth reading ... if you're a Star Wars fan (non-fans would never pick it up in the first place). There is plenty of the things Star Wars is famous for. Interesting aliens, action and Jedi fill the book's pages. And while there aren't any surprises, what you get is still a solid read that is really little more than an exciting chase scene drawn out over the length of a novel. A rogue has something Darth Sidious needs, so Maul is sent after him. The directive? Kill everyone who knows anything about said item. Bad news for characters is good news for readers. It's risky to set a book up around a villain ... especially one the author can't really do much with. Risky, but it's paid off here. It won't be the best Star Wars book you'll read, but it is well worth the time.

Talking the Walk: A Communications Guide for Racial Justice
by
John A. Powell
Bauknin
, June 28, 2009
If you are an activist dealing with the media in a racial justice capacity (in other words, you expose racism where you find it), this book should be required reading. It presents ideas and ways to go about dealing with the media to ensure your message isn't diluted or twisted. For that alone it is invaluable. If you aren't an activist dealing with the media, this book has little to offer. That's not to say it is unworthy of reading, however. For non-activist types who are still cognizant to race issues, the sections dealing with how the media covered events like hurricane Katrina will prove insightful and interesting. You could skip the rest of the book and this section alone would be well worth your time.

Conan The Warrior: Conan 7
by
Robert E Howard
Bauknin
, May 15, 2009
Yes, these three stories are by-the-book sword and sorcery, but Howard wrote the book on the subject. This is pure pulp goodness, with flowing bud, half naked women, magic, and split skulls. It doesn't get much better than this, and that is why I can't recommend this Conan book enough. Howard might not be thought of as a literary genius, but his work survives for a reason, and this book lets readers see why. Creepy in spots, purely violent in others ... this is a book that will appeal to readers on many different levels. Pretentious readers, however, need not apply.

Pranks 2
by
Vale, V.

If the first book was the Bible of the artform of pranks, this is the Bible Part 2 (More Bibleicious). If you ever had any doubt that pranks not only are art, but can change people's world, this is something you need to read. The interviews are hilarious and eye-opening. The only thing that is disappointing is that it isn't 500 pages.

Weird U S Your Travel Guide to Americas Local Legends & Best Kept Secrets
by

If insane asylums, haunted forests and strange people are your cup of tea, then this is the tome for you. This isn't your standard U.S. travelguide. This is where the strange hits the road. This is made for people who think that hanging out in cemeteries on vacation is far better than seeing yet another strip mall. The photos add much to the book, too. They are plentiful and really help add an extra dimension to the tales. Believe it or not, that's up to you, but you can believe that if this review sounded the least bit interesting to you, well, you'll love the book.

Apocalypse Culture

Prepare to be disturbed and amused. What you will read within these pages will challenge your feelings on humanity. Let's face it, if you sought this book out, chances are you don't really have high expectations of people and their utter strangeness, but you will find something here to surprise you. If you live a sheltered life, this will destroy you. If you have an appreciation of the fringe and haven't read this, well, you have no idea how deep that appreciation can get. Enjoy.

Great examination of a fascinating man. This tome, and it is a tome, makes some startling links to modern political figures, Nazis, and so on. Anyone interested in history, Nazis, American politics, spies, and the like will find this book an invaluable addition to their library.

Disturbing. Haunting. Based on a true story. As you begin this tale of human cruelty, you will feel guilty turning to the next page, but you will be unable to stop, as you must see how it ends. This is one tale that will leave you reeling, and you won't soon forget the experience.
