How to Write and Publish a Successful Children's Book: Everything You Need to Know Explained Simply
by
Cynthia Resser

, March 04, 2010
I was skeptical when I saw Cynthia Reeser’s book “How to Write and Publish a Successful Children’s Book.” I’ve bought similar books and workbooks in the past and was sorely disappointed. I have to admit, however, that Reeser’s book gave me new information that actually seems to be valuable. This book has something for everyone who wants to write for children. There’s information about writing nonfiction and graphic novels geared toward children as well as the standard fiction information. I think other writers will also find the section about self publishing very useful. Technology has made it possible for us to do this, but we are told too many times that self publishing has no benefits. Reeser’s book looks at the pros and cons of self publishing to help aspiring writers determine what is best for them. The three biggest assets to this book are the last three “chapters.” Chapter 11 outlines the importance of networking and marketing yourself as a children’s writer. Chapter 12 reminds that it’s okay to make a living doing other kinds of writing as you work on your career as a children’s writer. The appendix is full of sample documents and resources that are geared at making you successful – not selling a sequel or workbook to this book! I’d recommend this book to anyone who has ever considered writing for children. As a matter of fact, forget about the other books out there and get just this one.

How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Interior Design Business [With CDROM]
by
Diane Leone

I really expected a lame start when I saw this book started with history. How could the “history” of interior design be important? I had initially planned to just skip the history chapter because I thought the information was unnecessary. Now realize that it helps ground the designer to deep roots of the career field. It shows that interior design is not a trend simply made popular by TV do-it-yourself shows. I love the business plan that is outlined in this book. If you are thinking about starting a business – any business – get this book for the business plan guideline! Banks and the Small Business Development Centers talk about a business plan like it’s a horrific undertaking. Leone has simplified it to exactly what a good plan should be. It’s easy to understand, easy to follow and easy to alter as your business grows. The toughest aspect for an interior designer is knowing how to set fees. Leone tells you how to do it – just not in the first few pages. Chapter 10 is full of advice for mark ups, retainer fees, and pricing and estimating projects. Leone also includes useful ideas on how to collect an ideas file, a design portfolio, and how to get that first client.

How to Use the Internet to Get Your Next Job

Nagle, Janet

If you are looking for a job for the first time in 10 years or more, you need to read this book. Online portfolio? I’d have never thought of making one. If you think job hunting online is going to be easy, this book is quick to remind you that technology has made job hunting more competitive than ever. One of the most helpful aspects of this book is its “Internet Lingo” section. Knowing these terms will make you more competitive in the job market. This book also shows how to do corporate research to determine the companies for which you would like to work. It’s these little tidbits of information that will make a non-tech person like myself seem more competitive in the job market. I think it would also be a good resource for students who are just entering the work place, too. It will make them think about how they use social media outlets and how they can better use them to advance in their careers.
