Eleanor and Park
by

I don't know where to even begin. I absolutely LOVED every single second of this book - I loved the writing style, Eleanor and Park, Park's parents, Eleanor's "friends", even Tina and Steve, by the end. There are lines so beautifully written in this book that they made me want to cry (and I'm not a book crier...I'll cry over commercials and movies, but not books). This was truly an amazing story. The author made me absolutely despise the situation Eleanor found herself in, and in addition to hating the situation, I despised her mother and "step-father". They were beneath any care or consideration. I cannot fathom treating your children - or allowing your children to be treated - the way this mother did. Mother of the Year, she is not, nor will she ever be. Eleanor, however, will be okay...she's a strong girl. Here are some of the most poignant lines... ...'his eyelids fluttered. (Only eyelids do that. And butterflies.)' 'It felt so good that it crowded out all the bad things. it felt better than anything had ever hurt.' These are beautiful. I also learned that Bono was 15 when he met his wife. That makes me happy.

Wading Home

This book was AMAZING! I learned so much about Hurricane Katrina and the devastation she brought on the city of New Orleans from what seemed a first person perspective. The story is beautiful, the characters well-developed and so redeemed at the end. Poignant and sad, but hopeful, this is a book that demands being read. I don't believe I've ever read more beautiful descriptions. Read this book.

Gone Girl

When you read a good book, you can love a character or hate one. I did both with the characters in this novel. In the beginning, it's hard to especially like either character, but this changes as the story moves forward and you end up loving/respecting one and despising the actions of another. I don't know that I've been so angry at a character as I was the wife in this novel. The characters grow and you grow reading this book. And the end? I promise, the end will leave you shaking your head.

Lost Dogs

The jury is still out on whether I actually SHOULD have read this book or not. The reviewers called it "heartwarming" and a tale (or tail) of redemption. It was that. It was also horrifying. During the Vick business, I read only headlines and refused to get the detail of what happened at Bad News Kennels. I was angry and terribly sad. Now I am furious. Don't let the reviews fool you; you learn heartbreaking and terrifying details of what happened to dogs prior to the search and rescue that are scarier than anything Stephen King to write. Details that I wish were NOT in my head. I cried. I laughed. I'm changed from reading this book, and isn't that what a good book is supposed to do? All I'm sure of is that I'm going to love on and hug my dogs just a little bit more since I read this.

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children
by
Ransom Riggs

What a GREAT book! Without being too sappy, this book is sweet and charming. Jacob witnesses his Grandfather's death and from his last words goes on a journey to find what those words meant. On this journey, he meets Miss Peregrine and her wards - the paculiar children and adventure awaits. The use of old photographs throughout the book is amazing - each one depicted in the story. I've never seen anything done like this. A great book for readers of any age - one not to be missed.

You Better Not Cry: Stories for Christmas
by
Augusten Burroughs

These are GREAT stories. Some of them, absolutely laugh out loud funny. Some of them so poignant you want to cry. Burroughs is hysterical and made us all laugh with "Running With Scissors". It's more of the same (but different) in this Christmas collection. Anyone who has every had a Christmas that didn't look like one on a greeting card will enjoy this book. It's a great holiday read!!

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

Seth Grahame Smith

Grahame-Smith has really tapped into something great in his books about zombies (Pride & Predjudice and Zombies) and now, his newest, the story of Abe Lincoln as a vampire slayer. It's a great book, historical and comical. I will read each and every one of Grahame-Smith's books.
