Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Ishmael

If you have ever contemplated the meaning of life - you're just one of us. We've all sat and wondered what it is all about. In Daniel Quinn's Ishmael, we get a glimpse into the deeper meaning of life. The incredible opportunity to learn the meaning of life, and form a gorilla at that. This book opens your eyes to things you've never even thought about. It teaches us lessons we didn't know we wanted to learn. It opened my eyes to all things possible and magical. I couldn't put it down and I'm glad I didn't. If I had the opportunity to meet and experience what Ishmael has to offer, my life would change dramatically. The opportunity the book gives you is close enough to change my outlook on life - which is good enough. The words in this book make you think, and encourage you to look at yourself in a whole new way. Ishmael is refreshing and beautiful.

Griffin & Sabine An Extraordinary Correspondence
by
Nick Bantock

If you've ever had the perfect pen pal, or wished to, this is the book for you. Griffin and Sabine fall in love through a series of beautiful letters, each of which you can hold in your hand. Nick Bantock takes real art, and makes magic with it. The story gets tangled, and it is hard to tell which way is up, and more importantly if true love really exists. The Griffin and Sabine Saga is out of the box, romantic, inspiring, and the perfect read for a cozy Saturday afternoon.

Long Way Down

It's the story of life, literally. The journey from the top of the building, to the ground is one of sacrifice, and the true meaning of looking out for one another. By taking the long way, the reader personally gets to know each of the four characters like a friend. You're so drawn in to what brought each of them to the top of that building on new years eve you can't put it down. Will they ever jump, or will the four of them find solutions to their problems, and learn to use the stairs forever?
