Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. It sure is hard to decide which book was my favorite for the whole decade - but this one comes to mind. Gripping, compelling and impossible to put down.

Dispatch
by
Bentley Little
Tracy

Well, I definitely won't complain (when you read Dispatch, you will see how putting your complaints into writing can get you into deep, deep trouble!) Bentley Little is great, and the only thing that keeps me from giving Dispatch 5 stars is that it wasn't as great as his other novel "The Store". Now I have "The Ignored" on my shelf waiting to be read, and I'm sure I'll be ordering more Little books after that.

Nickel and Dimed: On Not Getting By in America

Entertaining and very informative! Unfortunately I am one of the working poor at this time, but I'm fortunate in having it better than most of the people that the author meets in her experiment. This book has definitely motivated me to strive for better career opportunities.

Spooky, creepy, yet it felt realastic and thankfully wasn't grotesque. The characters and almost all of the storyline were completely believable. This was the best book that I have read in a long time. King and Koontz fans would enjoy Bentley Little.

Most Evil Women In History
by
Shelley Klein
Tracy
, September 23, 2008
Read the background stories of some of the all-time most evil women in history and in modern times. A real page turner! Full of biographies of some very well known (and other less notorious names). I thought this reading material would last me a while, but I plowed through the pages in two days.

Unforgettable! Dean Koontz is a great suspense writer, and I think From The Corner of His Eye was one of his best books!

Educational, entertaining and very funny! If the history textbooks in school were written by Vicki Leon, I think that we all would have paid a lot more attention in class.

Though this book is about sex and murder in the 1970's it also has a sensitive side. This book is not to be missed. It's on my very exclusive list of books that I actually re-read every few years.

Almost Moon
by
Alice Sebold
Tracy
, January 30, 2008
If you liked Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones", you will love "The Almost Moon". Sebold has a classy but readable way of writing on the most peculiar subjects! In The Almost Moon the main character murders her mother. It seems so realistic and the main character seems somehow reasonable in her actions.

Joy Of Funerals
by
Alix Strauss
Tracy
, November 30, 2006
It's such an interesting book, and written in a highly unusual format. The book reads as short stories, but by the time you get to the end you can see how they are all inter-connected and all of the short stories make sense as a whole.

The Bitch Posse
by
Martha O'Connor
Tracy
, October 03, 2006
This book moved the story back and forth so smoothly between 1988 (when the characters were in highschool) to 2003 when they their led diverse lives of grown women. The three young women shared a very big secret from highschool, and it effects them all in different ways in their lives of young women. Very edgy, it's entertaining and involved, yet easy to follow.

Running with Scissors: a Memoir
by
Augusten Burroughs
Tracy
, October 01, 2006
I could not put this book down. Augusten Burroughs tells the true story of his disfunctional childhood in a way that makes you feel that you are right there next to him. It is fortunate that they are making this into a movie (for those who don't read). But if you are on this website, you obviously DO read, so don't miss out on this book!
