Homer Price

I know, this book is really dating me but it is one of my favorites to read out loud. My mom read it to me and I read it to my own kids and the children in my class. Robert McCloskey's classic collection of stories is about a young lad named Homer Price and the every day lives of the folks living in the little town of Centerburg, Ohio. Each chapter brings a new adventure and mystery for Homer and his friends to solve. There are robbers and a skunk, a comic book hero come to life, a run away doughnut machine and a lost diamond bracelet, the worlds biggest ball of yarn, a whistling mouse exterminator and, of course, the famous town pageant. The time period is in the 1940's and, without even realizing it, your children will learn a little about life before computers and i pods through McCloskey's entertaining stories and his expressive illustrations. You'll laugh out loud together as the author good naturedly pokes fun at small town life and the institutions that we hold dear. www.WondersomeStorytime.com

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 01

Ian Fleming

You'll be happy that you added this classic to your read-a-loud collection. Fleming writes in a wonderful rhythm spiced with British phrases that makes it almost impossible not to read the story in a British accent. The Potts family is instantly likable: "But the Potts were a happy family who all enjoyed their lives and since they were not in the least sorry that they had no motorcar to go whirling about in, we need not be sorry for them either." When Commander Potts, inventor and adventurer, salvages an old Paragon Panther racing car you just know that this family is in for a grand adventure. Ian Fleming incorporates the same brand of intrigue, adventure and creative gadgetry that he uses in his Bond series into his one and only children's book. wondersomestorytime.com

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

"A told B, and B told C, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree.' " When I think of teaching the alphabet and letter recognition I think of this book. The simple bold illustrations of letters rhythmically climbing to the top of the coconut tree all the while building suspense as we wonder, "Chicka chicka boom boom! Will there be enough room?" In the text the letters, A,B,C etc., are in upper case while in the illustrations they are in lower case. This offers a great visual teaching moment without being pushy. There are so many lesson plan ideas for letter recognition and rhyming patterns that you can really have fun with this book. Have a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom week and develop progressive lessons that will build on each other each day. www.wondersomestorytime.com

Chimps Dont Wear Glasses
by
Laura Numeroff

This is a wonderfully silly book written by one of my favorite authors, Laura Numeroff (author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie). The text continually tells us what our favorite animals don't do while the clever and comical illustrations by Joe Mathieu cause us to consider the possibilities of chimps that wear glasses, horses that hang glide and reindeer that square dance. The book ends with an invitation to the reader to, "...close your eyes and draw with your mind." and enter the dream themselves. wondersomestorytime.com
