Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Jamrachs Menagerie

Some years the Booker Prize short list contains some real losers. This isn't one of them. Jaffy Brown, the protagonist, carries a strong storyline, with enough creative twists on the adventure tale, the quest tale, to drive you through 250 pages. At points the writing is transcendental, and there are a few passages that will stick with you. Somewhere on the continuum between Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies and David Mitchell's Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet in terms of literary intensity, Jamrach's Menagerie rewards the read.

Nobody Move

Denis Johnson, Dennis Johnson

More Hammett than Chandler, a good read when you need something fast-paced and hard-edged. West Coast noir for the current age, Johnson's writing feels both old an modern. The plot doesn't disappoint, and is only predictable to the extent you want it to be.
