Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Giver 01
by
Lois Lowry
faob
, July 27, 2010
In her novel "The Giver," Lois Lowry explores the idea of a false utopia. This utopia is free of violence and hatred because people are all (literally) color blind. Everyone in the village have forgotten the joys of freedom & difference. "The Giver" fallows a boy named Jonas, who has been selected to become the next "Receiver of Memory." With the help of his friend and mentor, Jonas soon begins to see the emptyness and falsehood of the community.

This book lives up to it's name; It helps people do things better. This book helped me give books a secound chance that helped me see books as being as useful as the internet for gathering resources. It also helped me find books that I could read simply for pleasure.

The Summer of Riley
by
Eve Bunting
faob
, June 30, 2010
"Who say's a dog is a man's best friend?" asks the pillow on Peachie's sofa. Well, to william, his new dog Riley IS his best friend. How valuable is a dog's life? What about a horses? "The Summer of Riley" raises the question of the quality of human law-is it really as flawless as so many seem to think? How do you deal with loss?

Wit A Play
by
Margaret Edson
faob
, June 29, 2010
My school chose "Wit" as a fall play a few years back; this decision later helped me understand what one of my teachers went through. My teacher is different from Vivian Bearing; my teacher has always been a fervent supporter of her students. She continues to fight both her cancer, and global warming. She has already come to the valuable conclusion of what makes life worth living that Vivian strives so painstakingly to find.

Great Gatsby
by
F Scott Fitzgerald
faob
, June 29, 2010
Fitzgerald offers genius financial advice-in an entertaining fashion. "The Great Gatsby" is the story of Nick, a war veteran of the Great War (WWI), who ventures to New York in order to learn the workings of the bonds business. Nick finds distaste towards his big-spender of a "new rich" neighbor; Gatsby. Gatsby frequently throws lavish parties in the hopes of impressing Daisy, Nick's cousin from the “old rich” part of town. Fitzgerald proves that it matters as much how long someone as been rich as how rich someone is.

The Unschooling Handbook: How to Use the Whole World as Your Child's Classroom
by
Mary Griffith
faob
, June 28, 2010
“The Unschooling Handbook,” by seasoned home school author Mary Griffith, is probably the first book where I didn't look at the clock every other page; it actually held my interest for more than a few minuets. Through quotations from real life unschoolers, Griffith provides a foundation for all people to see everything in life as opportunities for continuing education.

The Phantom Tollbooth
by
Norton Juster
faob
, June 14, 2010
The book that first made me enjoy reading; The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster, is about a little boy named Milo, who finds himself immersed in a world of imagination. Milo explores the world of the English Idioms the way a child does, bringing the reader to a state of childlike innocents where humor rests every where from the “Road of Expectations” to the “Island of Conclusions”. This book is simply a must read for any person (or watch dog) who enjoys a world where things are just a bit “punny”.

I generally do not enjoy such books, but the history behind the story is as good as the story itself!

Sweet Charity: Piano/Vocal Selections
by
Simon, Neil
faob
, June 12, 2010
First musical I was ever in. Looking back though, it does not stand up to other Neil Simon works. It has some wonderful songs like "If they could see me now" and "Rythem of Life" but it is a very predictable story of a heartbroken girl who is simply too nice.

Wicked The Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
by
Gregory Maguire
faob
, June 12, 2010
This story reminds me to look deeper into my felow man and ask why they treat me the way that they do-not simply assume they are good or bad. It helps people understand that behind every face is a person, a life that has had it's share of hardship. It helps me love those I wish I wouldn't.

Into The Woods
by
Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine
faob
, June 12, 2010
"Into the Woods" is a very deep peice-for those who are willing to look the wolf in the eye that is! It brings even adults back to the land of fairytales and childhood innocence. In doing so it reminds them that they were children once, and helps them remember what it feels like to have parents. It also helps children and teenagers understand that though their parents are not perfect, and make mistakes, they do love them. I am giving this book a 5 (Very good), but in the words of little red "nice is different than good"
