Animals Make Us Human Creating the Best Life for Animals
by
Temple Grandin
Michelle Siegel
, August 04, 2012
This fascinating book has a lot of insights into the higher picture of how behavior works in animals, and into the devilish details of dogs, cats, horses, cows, pigs, and chickens. It also covers zoos and wildlife more generally though with specific anecdotes. The most mind blowing moments happen when you realize, or Temple Grandin points out, that understanding humanity has an awful lot in common with animal husbandry. This is easily in my list of top 5 nonfiction books ever read.

The Memory of Water
by
Karen White
Michelle Siegel
, December 30, 2011
This book caputured my attention from the very beginning and carried it right through until the end. The mystery of what would cause a little boy to become mute was enthralling. The characters developed by Karen White are completely realistic and engaging. The focus on the South Carolina backdrop makes me want to hop in my car and go exploring there myself. I imagine if you are from this area it would be like coming home. This is my first Karen White book and I am sure I will read many more by this talented author!

Kristin Hannah

A love story of sorts that gets tripped up along the way. So let's say a real life love story with realistic characters and a beautiful setting. I LOVE Kristin Hannah's books, although this was not my favorite it ranks in the top three. A perfect summer read for any woman who is seeking true happiness in their life. Learn through Elizabeth and Jack Shore how to find true love, it is where you least expect it!!

A story of how perspectives can change what you believe. Mitch's parents are divorcing, they go to stay with his grandparents at Bird Lake. Spencer's parents are back to Bird Lake to see if they can handle being back at the place where their son drowned so many years ago. The boys develop a friendship but only after Mitch has set things in place so Spencer believes that his dead brother is leaving him messages. A story of forgiveness, belonging and acceptance. A perfect story for the Tween in your life!

Part mystery, part coming of age story and full fun! Amanda and Leo are "stuck" living their 11th birthdays over and over and again and have to figure out how to make it stop! With their bond of friendship they work together and break "the spell", at least for now!

Me
by
Ricky Martin
Michelle Siegel
, December 23, 2010
This book is sure to be remembered whether you are a Ricky Martin fan or not! This memoir is about Ricky's journey to finding who is spiritually, professionally and as a human being. Ricky's deep passion for the human spirit and how he reflects on what life opportunities he has had is sure to profoundly effect any reader, as a human being. This book causes the reader to reflect on our perceptions of people's differences, whether it is ethnically, sexually or otherwise and come to the realization that we all have a need for belonging, acceptance and love. I loved his tone and "down to earth-ness". Great read!

Just Breathe
by
Susan Wiggs
Michelle Siegel
, December 05, 2010
Just Breathe is a very enjoyable story with realistic characters. Sarah Moon is on the roller coaster ride that real life has to offer. She must surrender and go along for the ride and it ends up in the most unexpected of places. Divorce, twins, finding ones self and blended families are in the forefront of this story. Susan Wiggs brings humor and realism to her readers through Just Breathe!

Winter Garden
by
Kristin Hannah
Michelle Siegel
, August 29, 2010
I absolutely LOVE Kristin Hannah! Each of her books is so uniquely written! This one takes the reader on the journey back to Leningrad 1942 and to present day in the life of Anya Whitson, the mother of Meredith and Nina. Although Meredith and Nina have never understood why their mother was so distant from them, through her telling of a fairy tale they come to see their mother through new eyes. The first third of the book was somewhat slow but quickly developed into an elaborate story I will not soon forget! A true story of survival, love and relationships!

True Colors
by
Kristin Hannah
Michelle Siegel
, August 02, 2010
For the western girl in all of us, Kristin Hannah brings you the story of the Gray sisters. From the beginning through the end I was on the edge of my seat (saddle) to see how this tight knit ranch family would deal with life's next challenge. From the little girls to the grown women the ride was enjoyable!

Knit Two
by
Kate Jacobs
Michelle Siegel
, August 01, 2010
The sequel to the Friday Night Knitting Club is every bit as good as the first! Loved the journey with Dakota Walker, the daughter of the late Georgia Walker who owned the Walker and Daughter Knitting Shop of which the first book surrounded around. In this sequel travel with Dakota and her mom's circle of friends, now her supporters through life as they travel to Italy. Experience reuniting with long lost family, sharing great time with friends, and the further development of characters so close you are sure they are right there beside you! Easy, relaxing and warming book!

Knit The Season A Friday Night Knitting
by
Kate Jacobs
Michelle Siegel
, July 30, 2010
The third book of the Friday Night Knitting Club is like visiting old friends! Authors often have a difficult time creating sequels that match the excitement of the preceding book(s), but Kate Jacobs did it again! This story is poised during the holidays from Thanksgiving to New Years and explores the life of Dakota, the daughter of the late Georgia Walker, as she grows into to adulthood and the challenges that life throws her way. The circle of her mother's friends continue to be a staple to help guide her. The only sadness is that Kate Jacobs does not have another book in this series, yet!

Crooked Kind Of Perfect
by
Linda Urban
Michelle Siegel
, July 28, 2010
Everyone feels different than their friends in some way, especially during middle and high school. Urban let's kids know in A Crooked Kind of Perfect that being different is ok and can even be kinda fun! Zoe a tween with a dad who is a bit quirky himself tries follow her dream and make her family happy by learning how to play an organ and enters in a competition, no mind to the fact that it is her dream to play the piano in a recital. Zoe finds a friend in a boy who wants to be a baker, like her dad and the characters all come together as Zoe takes center stage in this story perfect for the oddball in all of us!

Promise Not to Tell
by
Jennifer McMahon
Michelle Siegel
, July 27, 2010
All it took was just one page and I was hooked! This is not my usual read but loved the suspense 100%. This story goes back and forth between the past where a horrific killing occured of a young child, Kate's best friend, also known as the Potato Girl and the present when another horrific murder of another young child occurs just when Kate returns to the small town. Who is murderer? Are the murders linked? Kate is hot on the trail. No one including the ghost of the Potato Girl, Kate's mother with Alzheimer's and everyone who knew the Potato Girl is under suspicion. A real taunting page turner!

Red Thread
by
Hood, Ann
Michelle Siegel
, July 26, 2010
I absolutely loved this book! The story follows families in America who wish to adopt a baby from China for the period prior to and right up to the adoption, the families in China who have to depart with their baby girls for various reasons and the woman who runs the adoption agency here in America who links the two worlds together. Hood could not have woven a better story which is sure to pull on your heartstrings (quite literally) and bind you to the women and men left in China without their baby girls. This book would be perfect for a Book Club as it surely leads to lots of questions and opportunity for discussions!
