Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Cranes Dance

I am not a dancer, so it was with trepidation that I picked up this novel, set among an elite dance troupe in New York. However, having read and fallen in love with Meg Howrey's fist book, Blind Sight, I was prepared to follow her anywhere. The Cranes Dance not only did not disappoint, I read it cover to cover on a Sunday afternoon when there were many other things I should have been doing. Kate, the protagonist, is fully engaging in all her dysfunctional yet witty glory. The world of professional dance, with its complicated politics, hierarchy, and backstabbing manipulation, is rendered in a way that is fascinating, intense and intimate. Kate pulls no punches, she is unapologetically honest about herself and others, even as she teeters on the verge of her own nervous and physical breakdown. Despite this, the story maintains a light, often humorous tone and manages to show the world of ballet as a not-so-glamorous lifestyle, one filled with hard work, discipline and glory as well as drugs, eating disorders and self-obsession. I'll never look at a dancer the same way again.

A beautiful, lyrical book that kept me engaged from beginning to end.
