Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Making It Radical Home Ec for a Post Consumer World

I've been following the author's blog for years, loved their first book (The Urban Homestead), and couldn't wait for this one to come out! Unlike many books that you read once and then put on your bookshelf, Making It is one of those books that you keep using over and over again. It's also one of those rare books that is geared toward people of all skill/"green" levels, as it contains projects that range from the simple to the complex. From things like natural shampoo alternatives to foraging, from making vinegar to beginning beekeeping, there's a project in here for everyone.

Black Ships Before Troy The Story of the Iliad
by

Unlike the other reviewers, my son LOVES this book! He read it for the first time in the 7th grade on the recommendation of some friends who'd read it in grade school, and it remains one of his all time favorite books. In fact, he loved it so much that he read The Iliad from which this is based (which he also loved).

More Charlotte Mason Education: A Home Schooling How-To Manual
by

Like her first book, this covers how to implement the CM method (and not just summaries of Charlotte Mason's original works). And also unlike many other books (which seemed geared toward elementary students) this book encompasses older children, and even includes a chapter on using the CM method for high school aged students. I found myself checking it out so often from the library that my son finally told me to buy it! (As a secular homeschooler, I should mention that this is not a secular book. However, it is rather easy to skip over the overtly religious parts.)
