Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Good Grief A Constructive Approach to the Problem of Loss
by
Granger E Westberg
Rev Don
, August 04, 2012
Granger Westberg might be considered the father of chaplaincy; and did his early work figuring out how faith and medicine relate. This book came as an outgrowth of that early work and he writes a succinct and clear explanation of the stages of grief and how we move through grief. Westberg defines 10 stages and uses a Christian approach in his writing. This book is short and succinct and well written. I have used this book personally, as I have moved through grief, and use it professionally as a member of the clergy, both teaching the stages, but also recommending it to many, including those grieving and those who may encounter the grieving, including nurses and other medical professionals.

In Search Of Lake Wobegon
by
Garrison Keillor
Rev Don
, February 26, 2011
I liked this book so well I checked it out of my local library, in Arizona, multiple times over a period of years. I finally bought a copy. The photographs by Richard Olsenius are outstanding, yet the text by Keillor is hard to discern how much is true and how much is his imagination. No matter! Even when exaggerating Garrison Keillor tells us an awful lot of truth in the mix. This is an excellent read in everyway; worth the photos alone. I have never lived in Minnesota. This book convinces me it might just be a place I would want to live.
